You might want to take a look at the EOF project (eof.sourceforge.net), which now creates standards for implementing other protocols over freenet. Before becoming a standards body, EOF created an SMTP/POP over Freenet gateway, but there are a few problems involved (check EOF's mailing list archives, they are not very long).
