I think perl would have been a better choice. Getting java working has been a 
royal pain for me. Perl is an excellent prototyping language. Intermezzo 
development was done largely in perl for example.

Of course its easy for me to say - I know perl well but don't know java. 
Anyhow I think all platforms would have been well serviced by perl and in 
addition perl has good support for networking _and_ performance is 
reasonable. Has anyone ever benchmarked perl vs java on a range of platforms?
