Hot Diggety! Andrew Hume was rumored to have written:

Two key questions:

1) Is it at the latest 10.4 rev? (10.4.11, IIRC?) If not, update it.

1a) If it's PPC, the 10.4.x-to-10.4.11 combo updater is at:

http://support.apple.com/downloads/Mac_OS_X_10_4_11_Combo_Update__PPC_

1b) If it's Intel, the 10.4.x-to-10.4.11 combo updater is at:

http://support.apple.com/downloads/Mac_OS_X_10_4_11_Combo_Update__Intel_

2) Does it have a Firewire port?

If so, then you could boot the 10.4 host into Target Disk mode (with a
FW cable between both hosts) by holding down 'T' at power-on, which
would make the 10.4 disk available to the 10.6 host.

(Otherwise, you can also do this via Ethernet or wireless but that
sometimes that can get a little complicated and speed will be by far the
fastest with Firewire if available.)

>From there, you could then run Migration Assistant on the 10.6 host,
importing data from the 10.4 disk that's mounted.

Given it's 10.6, the new MB is definitely Intel.

Should be able to. Migration Assistant will have the best odds of
preserving your original environment, so it's the recommended path.

BIG tip: prior to trying the upgrade (via any method), make a bootable
clone of your 10.4 disk _first_!

You can easily hook up a temporary USB or Firewire external hard drive
and run CCC (Carbon Copy Cloner) or SuperDuper to do the cloning.

(And, of course, then test a boot off the cloned drive, just to make sure!)
