The 32 port 40GB (32 usable) infiniband switches are about $8k. the 10g cards vs QDR cards are about the same (in fact, the QDR cards from Mellanox can be used as 10G interchangeably, and often people buy them as 10G cards). The SFP cables are about the same price either way. as long as it's a local cluster, you can run IP over IB just fine. If you need to gateway out, you need to spend quite a bit more for a gateway switch, but you get higher bandwidth and can get lower latency as well (SolarFlare is a new 10G vendor that is purported to have the best 10G latency, as long as you are willing to use RDMA instead of IP)
