Oh, come on, this is the *Internet* -- nobody curses people out on here!

Seriously, there are a lot of things about NetApp that "just work", and I 
think in general there's a longer list of "just works" for them than for 
many other vendors.

I think there are ways that shelves could be upgraded non-disruptively, 
but it's certainly not as easy as plugging new ones in and unplugging old 
ones.

However, I'm not sure there are a lot of cases for doing that.  The shelf 
shouldn't "run out of warranty" before the system -- it's sold as a whole 
unit, and unless you're changing the connectivity in the ESH modules (for 
example), the *shelf* wouldn't need to be changed out anyway.  I don't 
think NetApp has approved hot-adding shelves to a loop yet, which is a 
shame.  It does work, but last I saw (a couple of years ago) it was 
unsupported.
