The key is that the application is freezing and that she has to
force-quit to exit.  You'll need to resolve that situation.

Microsoft Word (on all platforms) has always restarted with a
"recovered" version of the previous document if it was closed
improperly.  That's likely what all of those temp files were.

One thing to try is to launch Word and Close any opened documents so
that Word is left running but with no documents open.  Then, quit Word
properly (Cmd-Q, for example).  Then, relaunch Word and it should open
with no recovered documents.  Finally, launch DocA, DocB, or DocC and
the correct document will probably open.

The situation will return if you cannot close Word properly when a
document is open.

Alas no they aren't.

I'm finding a ton of old temp files though, i.e. "~$cA.docx".  Since she 
keeps having to force-quit Word I guess.
