I have had excellent results running Solaris 8 SPARC in a container on a Solaris 10 SPARC machine in our training center.
I was able to do a P2V conversion of an old Ultra 5 running Oracle directly into a container on a not-quite-as-old Ultra 40 with a lot more RAM and disk. Host machine support is very broad, but as it has been pointed out elsewhere, you cannot cross architectures. If you need to have a reproducible/restorable environment then I suggest setting up an install server with a flash archive of the preconfigured system. That has been a huge time saver for me.
