If you only need 8 outlets or less, then these little units are pretty good,
and are usually available on eBay for cheap (about $100):

They have a web-based interface for interactive use, plus you can control
outlets programmatically by constructing URLs like this (for example, to
turn on outlet #3):

        http://login:passw...@switch/outlet?3=ON

It doesn't get much easier than that...
