One other thing I thought of after posting, of course.
There are now systems that make the surround-sound
implementation a bit easier with a bit of acoustical magic. Some
receivers have what is called a sound bar which simulates the
five channels without actually having you set up 3 loudspeakers
to your front and two behind you.
I will be the first to admit that I don't know quite how this
is done but it works well enough that several manufacturers sell
these systems. One such system calls itself the "Home Theater in
a Box."
You put the sound bar in front of the viewing position
like you would stereo speakers such that as you face the screen,
you also face the sound bar.
This would be something you probably would want to
investigate in person by going to a shop that sells hi fi gear,
but it may be to your liking and that is ultimately what it is all about.
The acoustical magic may be in the form of phase
shifting and keep in mind that if you want a subwoofer, that can
go just about anywhere in the room because human ears can't
localize deep base.
Sub woofers are not required but boy they sure sound cool.
We don't have one, but I sometimes wish we did.
