I just read the April-May "Sound and Vision" magazine
yesterday and they mentioned 7.1, 9.1 and 11.1 surround-sound
systems. I doubt that there is much media available with more
than 5.1 or 7.1 discrete channels.

Then there is the other extreme which I also read about
in the same issue of "Sound and Vision." What do you think of
Cirque Du Solil's tribute to the Beatles? It is a surround sound
system with 6-thousand speakers in it. Try as they might,
however, they haven't yet solved the logistics of getting all
four Beatles on the same stage these days.

I don't know if "Sound and Vision," which was formerly
"Stereo Review" is available in accessible form outside the
United States, but they discussed a lot of what was on display
at the Consumer Electronics Show earlier this year.

They said there was sort of a retro feel to some of this
equipment as stereo systems were being exhibited along with the
7.1 and up channel systems.

There were also a number of those sound bars like I
mentioned in a previous message.

When you think about it, Nature only gave us a stereo
audio input system and our ability to move around is what gives
us surround sound. With the right setup, you could wear
headphones and get a total surround-sound experience if the
sound system knew the position of your head such that moving it
would make the sounds you were hearing change the way they do
when you are cocking your head to hear something better or to determine
the direction of a sound. I am sure people are working on this
now. You would still need multiple sound channels in your media
but your particular audio feed to your headset would change as
you turned your head. It would be sort of like a D.J. adjusting
the mixer console to accentuate the sounds you were facing.
