Oh, one more question.
Does anyone know what's just under the fm band (88-108 on the fm band in the us) since I have a radio chip that receives down to 76 mhz (to be compatible with the japan/european fm commercial bands) but in the us, I don't seem to receive anything on the 76-88 mhz freq band, though I've tried hopping in as little as 50khz hops. Is there anything there over here, or is hunting there just an exercise in futility? Where does one go to lookup such things? Does the fcc list such freqs on their site?

Hi Travis

I can confirm the 2 meter amateur band is 144 to 148 MHZ in the Americas. What you'll probably find above that range is PMR, (Public Mobile Radio).

Interesting Martin. You mention that the 2 Meter band goes from 144 to 148 here, but then that means my little handheld radio I bought at Radio shack some 10+ years ago is a bit more than it claims. It goes from 144 all the way up to somewhere beyond 163 or so. Any idea why it was labeled a 2 meter radio if it's range was that large? Recently, it's had issues in that it now only access stations I'd already preprogrammed into it, and no longer will change freqs using it's up/down buttons, though hitting the preset freq buttons works just fine. I did find a fellow here in town who claims he works on such radios, so I'm thinking I'll drop by his place and see if it's fixable, but I don't hold out much hope, considering on how old it is. It's built pretty solid though, it's been dropped many many times, and only in the last year or so has began misbehaving, so if it can be made to work again, I'd sure appreciate having it operational again, it was great to be able to pick up the weather stations when we lived in Alabama, since there was almost always tornado or rough weather warnings being sent out. It was nice to be able to turn on that little handheld unit and get all the details in a few minutes, as opposed to wading through commercial radio, andhaving to wait a half hour or more for the same info.
