Hi Lynne and Gordon,

It doesn't sound that workable to me. Electrical
stimulation of nerves tends to defuse throughout the area near
the site of the stimulation. I have felt this myself if I
touched something that had enough voltage potential to be felt.
The relatively dry skin of your fingers is somewhat resistive
but if you feel the charge, you feel it over a rather undefined
area. The whole tip of your finger tingles with maybe a little
more tingling at the exact site.

Since the tongue is wet, it takes much less voltage to
shock it, but the whole end of your tongue feels it. It's really
very unpleasant. An old trick to check a battery such as a
9-volt battery is to briefly touch your tongue to the terminals.
I did that once or twice as a small boy and nothing terrible happened,
but a good battery is just before painful. There are much better
ways to do this and that is 50 more years of experience speaking
than at the time I did the original tests. A bit of a smile is
in order.

There have been other attempts to display images on
one's back or stomach somewhat like what the Optacons did with
our finger tips in the 1970's, but the trouble with backs and
stomachs is that the nerve ending density is much, much lower
than it is on our lips and tongues. I have never heard of
anybody before using direct electrical stimulation through the
skin. Having experienced this both accidentally and deliberately,
I would not like anything that did that as a manner of course.
