Hi all Some time ago I posted to this group to see if anybody would be interested to read more about the WDMyCloud device. The response was positive, for the most part. So here are a few more things I’ve discovered.
Firstly, the device is directly compatible with Windows backup software, as well as the Mac’s “Time Machine”, with iTunes on both platforms, with remotely accessing files and data via a series of apps on the Apple App Store, Google Play, Microsoft Windows Store and Amazon.com. The above may lead you to believe that you can remotely access the device which is accomplished by means of these apps. If so, you’d be correct. How accessible they are, I am only in a position to test on Apple’s platform, as I do not currently own an Android device or a Windows SmartPhone, although I am sourly tempted to invest in one or both of them, probably an Android device in the coming months although I know nothing at all about Android accessibility. Be that as it may, I’m getting off the point. The thing which really appeals to me at the moment is the iTunes library integration. I cannot deny that this device will be the answer to my prays in this respect because when I get it fully configured, it will give me access via a secure platform to my iTunes content from any Internet-enabled point anywhere in the world. It gets better! The device has a full-featured media server, (vastly superior to that found on a Fritz! Box, for example). You can customise what media types you want to be associated with what device, based on the device type, IP address, Mac address, or a number of other criterium. You can, of course, compartmentalise your personal cloud, share cloud access with other locally and wide area networked users, all in a totally secure and totally configurable environment. You can also connect USB 3.0 or 2.0 compatible devices to the port on the back of the device. That gives you even more storage than is available by default which, incidentally, happens to be 4TB. That, for a personal cloud, is pretty darn good I think. Ah yes, and I forgot to mention one other key point. The web-based interface for local and non-local, administrative and standard users is totally accessible. I configured my device without any assistance whatsoever and it is working very well. You can have these devices set up either for static IP4 network access or dynamic. Firmware updates are being released quite frequently and the device is well supported by WD’s technical support documentation and personnel. I’ll let you know more as I continue to learn. Also I may offer selected users a shot at using the device in the not too distant. I will let you know how I get on with my Time Machine backup and other uploaded data as I continue to learn. But it’s been a while since I acquired a device which has inspired me with so much enthusiasm. For me, at least, the possibilities are endless. I’m hoping to get both my Macs and all of my PC’s backed up to a personal cloud shortly.
