Hello Sarah I can only speak from our perspective here. But this device is the best thing since sliced bread! For what we need, it’s absolutely ideal. It allows us to schedule uploads. By the way, the thing about requiring specific web browsers is totally wrong. We have used Internet Explorer, Safari and one of our clients has tested with Linx as well, under Debian Linux I believe.
So all I can say is don’t believe all you read. Unfortunately you’re always going to get the boo-boys, no matter what you’re talking about. What I will say though is that it’s ideally installed in an environment where a static network is present. We, for example, have our device sitting on the IP 79.135.109.116 Gordon is going to add us a DNS mapping for that so that we can use the actual DNS hostname to connect. We’ll have it set in RDNS as well so that it authenticates properly. But that’s just our situation. We have the 4TB model, with the imminent arrival of another USB3 drive to hook on to the back of it which should give us ample storage, we’re going to take it up to 8TB in total. USB3 is just so incredibly fast, very much like Thunderbolt, although maybe slightly slower. But we’ve tried transferring files to/from a USB3 drive via our new MacBook Air and it absolutely flies. Large amounts of data transfer in a fraction of the time that it takes with USB2.0. Anyway, in summary, I guess it depends on what you need but for us, it’s great. The point about the admin account is valid I think. It seems crazy to me if the admin account cannot be made either invisible or private. I need to investigate that one. I’ll go and try again with Internet Explorer 11 now but I’m sure it works. We do need to try out the iOS applications to see if they are accessible. I really hope that they are, because the possibilities are endless if so. Seems reasonable since you can hook up other drives, more on that later. 2. According to this article http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/search/1/a_id/10392/c/130/p/247,487 you have to use safari or firefox to connect to the drive, or one of the free pc/iOS/mac apps. 3. according to a review at http://www.ubergizmo.com/2014/02/wd-my-cloud-review/ it looks good. since I paid $70 though for my 2tb elements drive $1`49 seems a bit like price gouging to me. 4. according to this same review (see number 3 for the source) you have to connect it via Ethernet, for he network part. That's fine but what about those modems that don't have more then 1 LAN port and no wan ports. This gadget is next to useless in my book. 5. set up seems pretty easy, but the reviewer was a bit "unnerved " by the software update taking a title of about 16-18 minutes. 6. The log in seems a bit odd. No root for further protection? and the first account, the admin account appears to be public. Not good depending on what you are going to do. 7. One thing I do like is this, quoting from the same review. "when a user is deleted, the share folder associated with that user is left untouched." 8. Another thing I like is the scheduled back ups, but I'm sure you have to have a lot more then your drive space, another set of hard drives maybe? A short quote explains this. ""“SAFEPOINTS” IS JUST AN AUTOMATED BACKUP OF A STORAGE DEVICE WITH A RECOVERY PROCESS." " Sounds convenient let's say if your WDMyCloud goes bad. 9. Finally, I like the ability to get notifications, let's say for maybe a firmware update. a warning, the WdSmart ware is only available for windows machines. I know Gordon already knows this but this is to point that out for others who might want to get this device. ======================================= The Techno-Chat E-Mail forum is guaranteed malware, spyware, Trojan, virus and worm-free To modify your subscription options, please visit for forum's dedicated web pages located at http://mail.tft-bbs.co.uk/mailman/listinfo/techno-chat You can find an archive of all messages posted to the Techno-Chat group at either of the following websites: http://mail.tft-bbs.co.uk/pipermail/techno-chat/index.html Or: <http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]> you may also subscribe to this list via RSS.
