I should not be up at this early/late hour but sleep eludes me so I decided to take a brake from my graduation paper and research this little gem. what I'm finding on Th. support pages is really interesting.
1. the space is 2-4 tb. Seems reasonable since you can hook up other drives, more on that later. 2. According to this article http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/search/1/a_id/10392/c/130/p/247,487 you have to use safari or firefox to connect to the drive, or one of the free pc/iOS/mac apps. 3. according to a review at http://www.ubergizmo.com/2014/02/wd-my-cloud-review/ it looks good. since I paid $70 though for my 2tb elements drive $1`49 seems a bit like price gouging to me. 4. according to this same review (see number 3 for the source) you have to connect it via Ethernet, for he network part. That's fine but what about those modems that don't have more then 1 LAN port and no wan ports. This gadget is next to useless in my book. 5. set up seems pretty easy, but the reviewer was a bit "unnerved " by the software update taking a title of about 16-18 minutes. 6. The log in seems a bit odd. No root for further protection? and the first account, the admin account appears to be public. Not good depending on what you are going to do. 7. One thing I do like is this, quoting from the same review. "when a user is deleted, the share folder associated with that user is left untouched." 8. Another thing I like is the scheduled back ups, but I'm sure you have to have a lot more then your drive space, another set of hard drives maybe? A short quote explains this. ""“SAFEPOINTS” IS JUST AN AUTOMATED BACKUP OF A STORAGE DEVICE WITH A RECOVERY PROCESS." " Sounds convenient let's say if your WDMyCloud goes bad. 9. Finally, I like the ability to get notifications, let's say for maybe a firmware update. a warning, the WdSmart ware is only available for windows machines. I know Gordon already knows this but this is to point that out for others who might want to get this device. And now to attempt to get some sleep. Take care to all.
