Hi Colin This is quite interesting, and yes, I found most of this info from Eric in the Mac Access list archive. My slight concern here is making changes to native VoiceOver. I have personally never encountered the need to modify the caps lock key to simulate the VoiceOver keys. I’ll post further to this on our sister group, but I am curious as to why this would be an issue.
There is, of course, another way to get into the Screen-Reader Settings menus, regardless of which one you are using. If you need to do this repeatedly I can see why this particular method would be tedious. But all the same, using NVDA 2014.2 and Jaws 15.0.whatever.the.latest.revision.number.is. I rarely find the need to go into the settings menu. So I’m not sure that I will be making these changes. My problem regarding Windows inside of the VM is that the host OS keeps taking control of the keyboard. Therefore, I lose control of the guest OS. This never used to happen for me, but it’s been literally years since I’ve needed or wanted to use Fusion seriously. Now, however, that need is acute, as I require both operating systems on one machine. I’ve deliberately opted not to use BootCamp for a number of reasons. Primary of which is related to drive space. We use a RAID array based in hardware as our permanent external drive on my MacBook Air. This gives me a 4TB Thunderbolt drive permanently available, and it’s so darn fast that using it to host a virtual machine, even with synthetic speech output, is in no way inhibited by the fact that the VM is not in the standard location. The advantages of doing it this way are numerous! Firstly, it means that I can expand the maximum limit of the drive to way in excess of that which I could using the MacBook’s internal drive. Second, it means that the virtual machine is portable, so I still get the space saving, but can take the VM with me using the external RAID Array system. Thirdly and, perhaps, the most important advantage is that I can back up my Mac totally and separately from the Windows system, of which I can also make an image. All of these techniques wouldn’t be possible were I using a Boot Camp system. Oh yes and, of course, it means that I still have the option of using my favourite operating system for doing things like scanning, multimedia and lots, lots more. I do have a BlueTooth keyboard which I could use I guess. That might be a great idea actually as it would allow me to use the machine with the Mac sitting on my desk out of harm’s way. Hum, yes, think I’ll action that one later. I’m going to have to think long and hard though about changing the behaviour of keys under OS X. I’ve never had the need to use the NumPad commander to be honest, never ever. But maybe I’m missing something pretty obvious. Thanks for posting this though, it’s an interesting idea.
