Gary,
Actually, I am on a computer assist email list and most of the computer experts there
agree these free
ones are just as good as the pay ones and use less resources.
AVG Grisoft is one of the popular ones.

Bil, it probably has the approval rating because it IS free. I use
Norton 2003 and I have absolutely no problem with it. It automatically
downloads the new updates and it caught this new virus that just came
out the day before. Maybe some people don't have their Norton configured
right or something if they have complaints about it. My theory is I'll
use Norton because they are a big outfit and therefore I would think
that they would have more research and development in catching viruses
than the little company. Maybe the little company might contract to use
the Norton engine, who knows? I personally wouldn't trust a "free" virus
scanning service to catch all the viruses, nor would I trust them
scanning my hard drive for fear that they would be "snooping" my files.
They have to do something for money, and maybe snooping files is their
income?

Just my opinion- I could be totally wrong.
