CALL FOR PAPERS Papers are seeked to be included in this edited book, which is being proposed to Routledge's 'Networked Cities' series:
AUGMENTED PUBLIC SPACES Articulating the physical and electronic city Editors: Alessandro Aurigi (Newcastle University, UK) Fiorella De Cindio (Milan University, Italy) FOR A LONGER, MORE COMPLETE VERSION OF THIS CALL, PLEASE VISIT http://www.lic.dico.unimi.it/augmentedspace.php The book will explore the intersection and articulation of physical and digital environments, and the ways they can extend and perhaps reshape a spirit of place. The contributions in Augmented Public Spaces will consider the emergence of the phenomenon from two main perspectives. The first is a theoretical and conceptual analysis of the nature of the relationship and combination of physical and digital environments. Some of the chapters will look at how to interpret and reflect on the ways these combinations could redefine the public sphere of the city and indeed its potential to support successful interactions, public places and environments, as well as the numerous issues they raise. The second perspective will be aiming at exploring specific types of digital enhancements to the public sphere and arena of cities, by looking at early experiences and implementations of digital technologies in a public, urban context. These can range from more mature experiments of virtual but localised communities, which try and address issues of citizenship and participation in the information age, to actual digital enhancements of physical public places through ICT and media. For these reason, the book is bound to have an overall interdisciplinary view, though its urban and place-oriented focus will characterise it respect to the majority of other works from the fields of digital communities and social informatics. CORE THEMES The editors are seeking contributions in the following areas: - Urban design theory and practice, public spaces and ICT - ICT and media-enhanced public spaces: experiences and suggestions - Urban planning, public participation and local knowledge in the city of the information age. - The urban public sphere, e-governance and its relation with the physical city - ICT-supported regeneration of local communities and neighbourhoods SUBMISSION DEADLINES AND PROCESS Interested potential contributors should send a 1000-word extended abstract to [EMAIL PROTECTED] by 11th December 2005. These will be refereed, and we will do our best to notify authors within 45 days on whether their proposal has been accepted. After this the whole book proposal will be reviewed by Routledge, and if successful we will ask contributors to send a full paper by the end of April 2006.
