i think something nice could be to fork the existing on another Google code project, being very clear it's an attempt to "open" the source code to contributors. This may make people more enthusiast about contributing. Then, let's all try to do something, i think if we find a good mathematician who is able to decompose the different algorythms to pseudo-code, i myself would be able to do something interesting, as long as there is support from people who already have a bit experience with Tesseract (To avoid already-done misstakes for example).
