seems to do better when given a grayscale image, especially if you
think you know better which weights to assign to the red, green and
blue components when you build your grayscale. If you have an iPhone /
iPod Touch / iPad and wants to see for yourself the Tesseract 3.0

Having said that, there are exceptions to every rule - we try to
dynamically determine whether color mode may work better and revert to
that mode in that case (happens in less than 10% of images).
