I didn't see anyone calling windows bullshit. I think you are being
sensitive.
It is expensive. It is closed source so when a hole is found it may not
get fixed very quickly.
It is bloated. It hasn't been terribly well written. It often still
crashes and will lock up the whole PC. If I had something lock up on
Linux, usually you can kill just that app. If not then you can kill the
gui and it restarts, no need to restart the whole machine. Show me how
you can do that on windows.
I finally got sick of windows viruses and moved to Linux only Dec last year.
I like getting my OS free without having to pirate it.
I like not having to worry about the scourge of viruses.
It is harder to run so not for everyone.
If you want to write software for all three major platforms, you have to
use libraries that can run on each OS. .net doesn't so is of no use.
It's source code is not open so also there is a bias not to use it
because it may have holes in it. And again it's bloated.
Everyone has a bias. If you are happy with windows don't be so sensitive.
I played with Linux on and off for 20yrs. I know how to secure an XP
box. I had multiple layers of security, I never downloaded much stuff. I
was very careful. I ran as a limited user but still I got seriously
got. The only thing I have now is a firewall. I feel free. My PC runs
faster. I'm still very careful and I love it but I say it again, it is
not for everyone.
Cheers

Windows is only one of the platforms that Tesseract supports, that's why.
It's not 'free' - you have to buy Windows to get it and be able to use
it. Last time I checked, Windows was pretty expensive (not that price
has anything to do with my not using Windows. It's a truly awful
operating system).
Initial question was "windows release with support for compressed
tiff's".
On Windows you get the free "Visual C# Express", you unzip the tessnet
wrapper, the tessdata, and you can do OCR (for free) in 7 line of
code.
You can read TIFF, PNG, JPG, BMP, GIF.
The screenshoot you have here
http://www.pixel-technology.com/freeware/tessnet2/demo.png
was done in 120 line of code.
Can you do it with your OS?
Show me.
Tired of people saying Windows is bulshit but don't know it.
