We had the same problem with the expiration date on medicine boxes.
We obtain satisfactory results using grazing light and by a careful
binarization of the image.
We are using for this Leptonica.

Hi,
I need to implement a solution for reading characters from images
taken in the production line.
The text I need to read is engraved on the manufacturing parts. That's
why it is bit blurred.
Can anybody please suggest if there is any preprocessing required in
order to use tesseract.I can send the sample images if required.
