Thanks! Any pointer to what the files with different extensions are?
Here is what I guess

.pat plain patterns
.chr the set of characters used in the pattern file
.hyp hyphenation exceptions
.lic license

Is that correct?

Right.

What of those four files should be part of a contribution, e.g., is the
.chr file automatically generated from the .pat file or is it in the
responsibility of the contributor?

Well, german-x would be the first package to provide such files, so I guess the rules are still to be established concerning the responsibility of the contributor :-) As far as I am concerned (hyphen.cfg and etex.src), only .chr and .pat are used by LuaTeX (which is the only TeX variant to use them). I don't know what the .chr files are good for, but surely Mojca or Arthur will enlighten us.

Where should contributed files be committed? (In case I can manage to
recover my account data for the svn.)

Personally, I can't see any reason not to ship them with the other files in the dehyph-exptl on CTAN. Then we'll install them at a proper place in TL (and the same place as dehypht-x-2009-06-19.tex is certainly a proper place).

Manuel.
