using plain TeX, you can as well use 8-bit characters for input by making them \active; see:

When trying to access this item, the following happens:
1. I am asked for my e-mail address and password. I type them in.
2. The item asked for does not appear, instead, the screen for the URL
http://icking-music-archive.org/mailman/private/tex-music/
appears.
3. I select January 2004, and since there is no facility for entering the post number, I click the field marked "author".
4. A beautiful index appears. I have no difficulty in finding the item I need, and click it.
5. I am asked for my e-mail address and password. I type them in.

At this stage I try another browser. Same thing. Only this time I give up after item 6. (For the record: I tried Lynx and Mozilla.)
Here is how to get access to the TeX-Music mailing list archive
1. Activate the link 'Mailing list archive and signup' near the top left corner of the Icking Archive welciming page. This brings you to http://icking-music-archive.org/mailman/listinfo/tex-music
2. Activate the link 'Tex-music Archives' pointing you to http://icking-music-archive.org/mailman/private/tex-music/
3. Enter your email address and mailing list password and press the button 'Let me in...' and you're there
4. If you can't remember your Tex-music password activate the button 'Unsubscribe or edit options' near the bottom of the TeX-Music web page. There you may activate another button in the section 'Password reminder' and get your password emailed to you.
Fortunately, I have kept my own archive of selected postings, and Rainer's posting on latin1 characters is there. But in the spirit of open source software, in which bug reporting is as important as program development, I report the above behaviour here.
