I do it thus: D"R�ckpos." Using an accented character, not a TeX
construction.
But then I do not use plain TeX, but LaTeX, and I input the file
produced by PMX into another file, which contains
\usepackage{inputenc,mtxlatex}
\inputencoding{latin1}
I believe that in some TeX installations, the required 8-bit input
encoding is already in plain TeX too, but I cannot explain how to
achieve that.
