Dear Jean-Pierre,

I remember you that it is possible to use directly accented letter with
plain TeX as with LaTeX. You must add these commands:

\input plainenc\relax\fontencoding{T1}\inputencoding{latin1}

Dear Olivier,

I do remember something like \usepackage[cp800]{inputenc}\usepackage[T1]{fontenc}
to make any TeX distribution understand accented letters as their show up
with DOS EDIT, but this is off-topic. The problem I was raising is the same
whether you type  or \"E.

Perhaps, you have to replace the encoding (latin1) with the right one
for your system.

With these settings, {\mycmbx PICES de BOLY} should give the desired
result.

I didn't find any plainenc file on my distribution, and I want a source that works on *any* TeX distribution. Did anybody try this plainenc on pdftex ?
