Thanks to Christian for discovering this problem.

After installing PMX 2.520 and the figbas font cmrj as outlined below, the
following file compiles OK:

However, after uncommenting the first 5 lines, TeX gives an overfull box and
the image has the dreaded thick vertical line at the end of the system. I've
looked in mtx.tex but couldn't identify the culprit.
