On my MiKTeX system, I *uninstalled* musixtex-fonts and tried to etex a file; the auto-install of musixtex-fonts kicked in and eventually the compilation terminated. Were you connected to the internet? Musixtex-fonts is a big package; maybe it just took some time for it to be downloaded and installed.
