I should clarify my last post: PMX will output midi, independent of
MusiXTeX. 

I'll also point out, based on my recent installation of TeX/MusiXTeX/PMX
from CTAN, that once everything is in place, pmx2pdf takes a PMX file as
input and spits out a pdf, leaving behind no traces of tex, dvi, or ps. We
could have a long philosophical discussion about whether that qualifies PMX
as a "scorewriter" or a "typesetting program."
