Sorry! I left out an important part of the sentence. I meant to say " Half
note or dotted half) tremolos with no connecting beam are intentionally not
allowed."

>What is it meant by unmeasured tremolo? Unbeamed?

I'm pretty sure "unmeasured tremolo" does not mean unbeamed. Read does state
that "in a measured tremolo the hearer will consciously perceive the note
values of the alternating notes. In a moderate tempo he would hear 1/16
notes as 1/16 notes; in a faster tempo he would be able to hear eighth notes
as eighth notea. In an unmeasured tremolo, no specific number of
alternations is heard. For very fast tempos a tremolo written in 1/16 notes
would ensure that no precise note values would be distinguished..." To me,
this talks more about how to play the tremolos than about how to notate
them. And it's not explicit about how to notate the distinction, but it does
seem to imply that the total number of beams is directly tied to how fast
the notes go.

A bit later he includes a table of notations for "unmeasured tremolos from
the whole note to the eighth note in fast, moderate, and slow tempos." The
fast tempo ones all have two beams; moderate 3, and slow 4. The only ones
with no beam connected are for whole notes (which also have no stem), and
for quarter notes. All the rest have at least one beam connecting the stems.
That's where I got the idea than 1/2 note tremolos need at least one beam
connected. But since the table only applies to unmeasured tremolos, strictly
speaking it leaves open the question of whether a measured half note tremolo
could have no connecting beams.

Read makes a few other statements on these matters that I also find
ambiguous, but I won't go into them here. Maybe I should try to find another
