I haven't been in it, but there is such a cave right there in Texas.
Tarbutton's Showerbath Cave in Hays County goes under the Blanco River, and it
is not a dive trip. There are several sumped caves under rivers, and even some
under seas, where they resurge. The deepest cave in the world,
Krubera/Voronja, resurges below sea level in the Black Sea.

To be fair, she did say "thousands, and even millions," and she included
rock formations, which could include the cave itself.
She says Jewel Cave is the world's third longest, but it is now listed as
second in Bob Gulden's list <http://www.caverbob.com/wlong.htm>. In general I
think the article was pretty well done. I always enjoy "the quite" when I
visit caves. :-)
