When Don first appeared at a meeting of the Razorback Speleological Society at the U. of A. in the early/mid 60s he may or may not have ever been in a cave (my memory is equally good for last week or last century). Upon his first trip with us (and we usually took new people somewhere greasy or chert crawly) we immediately recognized him as a tough, smart "real caver" and brother well met. He was with us as SRT penetrated the Ozarks and we taught ourselves largely by trial and error. He was always a most welcome member of all of our projects and he added a lot to the state files. We begged him to stay but the outer world beckoned. The best thing I ever did for caving was to encourage him early on. Keep it up, Don, and I'm still saving you a place in our current projects.
