PAPER
DearFriends,

This posting is about paper. Paper has different forms andsome of the most
widely used forms are writing paper, printing paper, manifoldpaper, packing
paper and Newsprint. Some nostalgic memories of paper are alsobrought in this
posting. I am thankful to all members reading and respondingeither directly or
through group posting.

Sincerely,

Gopala Krishnan 9-1-2011.

1. Respect to paper.

We all respect paper. We never touch with feet evenaccidentally on paper.  Even
a paperlying in the road, we avoid touching with feet. If a paper is
accidentallytouch with feet, most touch it with hand and put on eyes as a mark
of excusefor the action. We consider paper as Goddess Saraswathi.

2. Gowthama Buddah’swords

I have read elsewhere that what is not suitable forconsumption by humans will
be food for other beings. Nothing is waste in this universe. Irecollect about
paper and difficulty in production and about the scarcity ofraw materials. We
should make maximum use of paper as possible. Now a day manyuse of paper
information are avoided by use of electronic media.

3. Use of one-sidedpaper.

We can use writing and printing paper used one side andinformation no further
required   forrough works on other side. Balance of Paper used half way, the
remaining can beused, collecting all such papers and stitching from used
notebooks. In myboyhood days after the year was over and examinations passed,
the unused paperfrom note books were taken out and stitched and bind and used
as rough book.Good quality paper covers can be reused for many other preserving
purposes.

4. Paper, paper

We can see scrap merchants in the street collecting usednotebooks and
newspaper. They are actually bundled and send to paper factoriesand re cycled
and used to make hard boards and rough papers.  A very few percentage is used
for packingetc.

5. Different type ofpapers

The common papers we get are either news print type orwriting type. In writing
type different qualities are there. Special quality papers are bondpapers and
stamp papers used for property registration etc. Theyhave to be reserved for
pretty long time. Another is cheque leaves. I am notforgetting best quality
special cloth papers used to print currency.

The thick cardboard used in binding, is made from recycledpaper. The postal
cover, inlands and cards have one time use but they have totravel a long
distance and it should not get damaged. Similarly the postalstamps. Hence an
appropriate quality paper is used to make them.  Blotting paper is another type
of paper, notmuch used except where pens are used.

Thin type coloured papers are used for many decorationworks. Since they are cut
to pieces, they are in no way reusable. The packingfor gifts though are costly
paper. But are wasted and not reused.

6. Dictionary, Diary andrecord books

Very often referred is dictionary. If at all one page is lostwe feel in a
dictionary as a big loss. Incidentally most things we refer would beof that
page!!!

Most people preserve diaries at least for a specificperiod. The record books
and registers in shops are also maintained for alonger periods. The college
mark sheets, certificates, degrees are all to bepreserved for their life
period. The appropriate quality and thickness of paperare used for them.

7. Epics and religiousbooks.

Currently epics and religious books are neatly printed andvery good quality
paper are used and even waxing is done so that they are morepreserving.

8. Covers of soaps,ointments etc.

Here cover has to preserve the quality of content for alonger period. Hence the
quality of paper thickness and quality. Further coverhas an important position
in marketing. Hence high quality covers are providedwith attractive designs.

9. Is there any wastageof paper?

Normally good covers of packages are preserved for re- use.But there are many
wastages also. Some of these are unavoidable. One such ismarriage printed
invitations.

There are certain paper documents, which have to becompulsorily destroyed like
paid up promissory note etc.

10. Our office work

It was a practice for us in the office to keep one sideused paper for rough
works and drafts or for taking scribblinginformation.  If my GM wanted
fivedetails rather than keeping in memory, I used to write on rough paper
anddeleted after completing.

I keep one-sided paper for all my rough calculations eventoday. Old Xerox
papers no further required can be well reused on the otherside for rough works.
Similarly for writing petty information received onphone.

11. How to disposeHoroscope

I conclude this posting with a mention of an answer bySankaracharya regarding
disposal of horoscopes received for sons or marriageoccasion. He has directed
to float them in the river.

12 Cost of paper andstationaries

Comparing the cost of other items paper cost is less.Probably with computer and
external memories, necessity of paper is reduced. MostATMs now show only
balance in screen. Minimum paper is used. In most shops, printed receipts are
issued in lesser cost paper.
