1. Respect to paper.

We all respect paper. We never touch with feet evenaccidentally on paper.  Even
a paperlying in the road, we avoid touching with feet. If a paper is
accidentallytouch with feet, most touch it with hand and put on eyes as a mark
of excusefor the action. Weconsider paper as Goddess Saraswathi.

2. Gowthama Buddah’swords

I have read elsewhere that what is not suitable forconsumption by humans would
be food for other beings. Nothing is waste in thisuniverse. I recollect about
paper and difficulty in production and about thescarcity of raw materials. We
should make maximum use of paper as possible. Nowadaysmany use electronic media
where paper information is not necessary. Importantinformation are saved in the
memory of electronic media like computer, laptop, notebook, smart phone etc.

3. Use of one-sidedpaper.

Most of do not waste paper used one side and information nofurther required. We
use the non-written side of the paper    for rough works on the other side.

Balance of Paper used half way, the remaining can be used, collecting all such
papers and stitching.

My wife often comes to me for paper- written/printed oneside for writing her
information.

On the telephone table one side used paper is kept forwriting. Earlier it was
land phone, now 90% is the mobile phone- onlydifference. Land phone use has
very much reduced. I use internet line from BSNL.Most call me in mobile.

In my boyhood daysafter the school year was over and examinations passed, the
unused paper fromnote books were taken out and stitched and bound and used as
rough book. Good qualitypaper covers can be reused for many other preserving
purposes.

Update- Now rough book is purchased fromstationery shops, slightly less quality
paper is used in it.

4. Paper, paper

We can see scrap merchants in the street collecting usednotebooks and
newspaper. They are actually bundled and send to paper factoriesand re cycled
and used to make hard boards and rough papers.  A very few percentage is used
for packingetc. The merchants either collecting from homes or storing and
sending in lorryhave a good profit.  I know the case of ascrap merchant who
purchased his own mini lorry by bank loan and transporteditems, has now
purchased the shop area, and built two floors and occupy onefloor as home. Hard
work is required.

5. Different type ofpapers

The common papers we get are either news print type orwriting type. In writing
type different qualities are there. Special qualitypapers are bond papersand
stamp papersused for property registration etc. They have to be reserved for
pretty longtime. Another is cheque leaves. I am not forgetting best quality
special papers threaded withcotton used to print currency.

Now with electronic printers and Xerox special quality Xerox paper has
come. Most homes have now small printers, who use computer.

The cardboardused for binding, is mostly made from recycled paper.

The postal cover, inlands and cards have one time use but they have to travel a
long distance and should notget damaged. Similarly the postal stamps. Hence an
appropriate quality paper isused to make them.

Blotting paper is another type of paper, not muchused except where pens are
used. Still many stationary shops have blottingpaper.

Manifolding paper, stencil paper were widely used in atime, only typewriters
were there.

Carbon paper isstill in use, bothdouble sided and single sided, for special
uses like issue of demand draftsetc.  Even in printing sometimes carbonpaper is
in special cases.

Thin type colouredpapers are used for many decoration works. Since they are cut
to pieces, they are in no way reusable. Similarlypacking papers.

For single binding of text books now brown paper is there, waxed one side to
give durability.

Coloured bound paper are there for miscellaneous purposeslike temporary files
etc.

6. Dictionary, Diary andrecord books

Very often referred is dictionary. If at all one page islost we feel in a
dictionary as a big loss. Incidentally most things we wantedto refer would be
of in that page!!! Dictionary is well bounded and safely keptby most having
them. Now online dictionary is also available which I use manytimes for
convenience.  For spell checkand grammar often we use computer itself.

This posting is made referring on line dictionary for meaningsand laptop spell
check software. Well Learnt members   do notrequire either. They are sure of
meaning, spelling and grammar.

Most people preserve diaries at least for a specific period.

The recordbooks and registers in shops are also maintained for a longerperiods.

The collegemark sheets, certificates, degrees are all to be preserved forlonger
periods. The appropriate quality and thickness of paper are used forthem

7. Pass port.

Special quality paper is used for passport.

An interesting episode about passport of my wife and me. Mywife being only
SSLC, passport was issued with Emigration check required. To
eliminateemigration check, I got certificate from Directorate NewDelhi, I am
ITS Group A officer and Emigrationcheck was changed to – No emigration check
required being a wife of gazettedofficer.

Directors issued me permission to apply for passport.

I had to produce my DEGREE. For exemption of emigration check exemption,
sinceoriginal letter of ITS Group A was taken for my wife’s emigration
checkexemption by passport authorities. This was in 2002. Now rules have
changedabout emigration check.

7. Epics and religiousbooks.

Currently epics and religious books are neatly printed andvery good quality
paper are used and even waxing is done so that they are morepreserving.

8. Covers of soaps,ointments etc.

Here cover has to preserve the quality of content for alonger period. Hence the
quality of paper thickness and quality. Beyond that getting attract. Now people
may recollect wrappingwith thin waxed paper for sunlight and Lifebuoy soaps
when there was not muchcompetition.

9. Is there any wastageof paper?

Normally thick packing of large   itemspurchased preserved for re- use.
InTrivandrum there were shops collecting and selling jute bags, hard board
boxes. It helped very much in packing. Now packers and movers are there.

10 Best quality paperwastage

But there are many wastages also. Some of these are un-avoidable. One such is
marriage printed invitations. Some spent above 200-00 per invitation paper and
cover.Cover is used for putting compliment money. Invitation is simply disposed
aftera time putting in waste collector box.

There are certain paper documents, which has to be compulsorily destroyedlike
paid up promissory note etc.

11. Our office work

It was a practice for us in the office to keep one sideused paper for rough
works and drafts or for taking scribblinginformation.  If my GM wanted
fivedetails rather than keeping in memory, I used to write on rough paper
anddeleted after completing.

11a. How to disposeHoroscope

Sankaracharya has given the following suggestion regardingdisposal of
horoscopes received for sons or daughter’s marriage occasion. He has directed
to float them in theriver.

12 mini notes,scribbling pad

Probably for convenience and avoid more wastage small sizemini notes for
merchants are available for Rs 10-00 and 20-00. This also can beused to write
small information in home and keep. There are also scribbling padsstarting from
Rs 20-00.

12 a Cost

Comparing to many items paper cost is less now. Books, notebooks, registers,
file covers etc. cost lesser. Even price of diary is less forthe best quality
comparing to the price of other items

One reason could be from sugarcane waste also paper pulpscould be made now.
Other could be lesser usage even by students and in offices.
