KANAKKU PUSTHAKAM ACCOUNTS BOOK
Dear friends, Today my posting is about “Kanakku pusthakam”or roughly accounts book maintained on those days by the head male member ofthe Brahmin family and in Brahmina samooham etc on those days. In Tharavads on those there usedto be a kanakku pillaior kariasthan to do all works arranging men and materials andaccounting things. Mostly in Tharavads, the kariasthan was there to giveaccount if Kanakku pillai was different or to see both. Kanakku Pillai was aVIP. About few years back a Malayalam film was released named Karyasthan –Dileep actingas a Karyasthan, making two quarrelling janmies (Rich families) to reunite, andleaving their years old quarrels. There is a saying in Malayalam “Attil kalanjalaum alannukalayanam” (If at all thrown in to river, it should be measured andthrown) Most of the merchants of markets keepa small note for their accounts from my memory days till today. This notemaintained all their giving and taking and spending accounts and allmiscellaneous and important information. Now our catering people keep this inhand. Probably they feel it more comfortable than ipad. Aiming at these merchants andsmall workers still small size notes well bound and ruled is available instationary shops and in platforms too cost ranging from Rs 25-00 to 30-00. The ITC now a day make such smallnote in name class mate memo and sold without profit for Rs 10-00. I purchaseda few scribbling pads one month back from ITC and complimented to all familymembers and children, which they highly appreciated. Cost was/is only Rs. 20-00per pad which I could not believe. I use the scribbling pad for immediateinformation and accounts which may forget. I have seen many merchants keepcoins for 200-00 or so on Fridays to keep as alms and noting in their book. Let me go in to my “kanakku pusthakam” Sincerely, Gopala Krishnan 26-03-2021. 1. Father’s account book Having always a deficit, a smallnote kept by my father accounted for the loan taken and interest paid and somecapital too paid on his employment days. This also included the Panchayat Taxpaid and Village land Tax paid for memory. After retirement he used to writeabout increase in pension, arrears received, money received from me every monthand given to my brother etc. My brother was taking care of him at home if hewas not with me after he became a widower. This account book on those days alsohad the birth time and day, of us children. In fact my birth chart was prepared by my elder brother after collectingdata from this note for my marriage horoscope. Till such time I was a personwith only DOB and star. I knew nothing of Astrology. He was keeping a new small noteon later days probably due to the old note condition. This continued till hebecame not able to write and gone to LTI for receiving pension and moneyorders. One year before he became the late. 2. My account book. Writing diary came to me after Iam complimented first time with a small diary by my cousin in 1965’s. Till suchtime I have done only mental accounting of small cash with me keeping in acover inside the table. I am not able to explain even after seeing my father maintainingaccount book, why I did not resort to. Rather than diary information itwas account book. Very important information were like cinema going, haircutting, meals coupon, loans to friends and payment to newspaper, money to send to house, confirmationexamination, interviews etc. I have putin proper order of importance. The diary cum accounting practicecontinues with me till today. My cousin continued giving diary for 4-5 years. 2a. Temporary diary cum account While on tour due to weight ofdiary and my age, I take a small note of about 20 pages stapled and writeinformation and later copy if on tour and later copy to diary. I felt this wasmore convenient. It was before getting scribbling books. 3. Mystery of my brother’s account My late brother in home had hisend suddenly. He used to keep a diary as note book cum information. He waskeeping one more bank account in his name other than normal operating account.But nobody knew of it much other than his wife was told he had kept a depositof money for her if she survives him. She too knew nothing more of it or desired to know since she do neverwanted to survive him. Finally while rearranging thingsafter a month, this note read line by line with a magnifying class said wherehe has kept the bank account book with some scribbling and they could trace it.Fortunately nominationwas there in sister in law’s name. 5. Importance of the small note I recollect an incident occurred in 2000’s atTrivandrum. One of the ladies was going in her scooter from our residentialquarters at Trivandrum to nearby place. She had a fatal accident and the policecame in search of the husband to furnish the information with some scribbling information aboutresidence in a small account book kept in her hand bag. Even herphone number was not there. 6. Accounting There was a Tamil film by name “Bhama vijayam” before about 30 yearsand remake in Malayalam about three or four years back as “Sreekrishanpuratthae Nakshthra Tilakkam”. The film was aiming the importance of proper spendingdepend on income. An accounting would help to knowthe balance available daily. There could be routine and specialexpenditure. On travel it ispreferable not to take diary. If lost on way, it would be big loss. A donation of Rs 1000-00 can be given in month end if balance with is atleast 7000-00 in month end. If balance is just 3000-00, we canvery well reduce the donation to 500-00. It is only a small displeasure for afew minutes from the people coming. AFTER GIVING SPLENDID DONATION, IF WE REQUIRE MONEY, NO BODY IS GOING TOGIVE. It is good we should inculcateaccounting habit with our children also. With reluctance my son started in 35’s , now he is veryclear when he has send the money for different purposes and whatremains as balance and what more commitments are there. I read today about a barber whois a mutli crorer in Bangalore and travel in luxurious car. He rent luxurious cars. But unless he cut a few people’s hair he wouldnot get sleep on a day. I write accounts and try totally. Due to memory loss, sometimes it may not tally. But still with adifference, I complete and writeoff as miscellaneous expenditure. I get sleep after accounting. Once afortnight I make physical accounting also. 7. Conclusion Much information scribbled hereand there in an account book would help a lot. This need not be simple accountsalone. From gas w/l number to phone complaint to Pan Number can be there andmany more like works to be completed etc. if it has an ICE in front page it wouldbe very good.
