Q1 Is it advisable to consume moolikas?

A1 Yes. To protectthe body from these harmful effects, one must consume moolika
herbs everyday.

Examples ofthese herbs include thulasi (basil, Ocymum sanctum), vilvam(Cratæva
religiosa), ponnaanganni (Illecebrum sessile), pudhina(mint), karuvépilai
(Bergera konigii) curry leaves, arugam pul(Asclepias gigantca), vallaarai
(Indian Pennywort) and so on.

Q2 What is a Brahma Rakshas?

A2 A leisurely visit to ancienttemples of Kerala, would familiarize a person
with a place, built with lowelevation, appearing like a single large room
unfinished during construction, and stopped at plinth level, with that sand
filling.

Devotees take a walk around it, withdevotion, and a few pick up a pinch of that
mud from the elevated place. Thename given to this sacrosanct place is
`BrahmaRakshas'.

Some Brahmins are of the opinion that Brahmins do not`bow' to this place!

There is a beliefthat persons who acquired great knowledge, and yet refused to
part with it,become such BrahmaRakshas!

An abode or resting place is given to themthus! They appear or become
perceivable to those vulnerable people who areprone to run into demons or
Rakshasas, only during the early morning hours of Brahma-Muhurtham,and are
quiteharmless!

They (BrahmaRakshas), it seemshappen to realize a bit late (after having lost
access to the gross body), thatdistributing knowledge to worthy disciples
constitutes to be an integral partof spiritual evolvement. So,they stagnate at
a point, and wander aimlessly!

Basically they are supposed to begood souls; just that they discovered a bit
late that spiritual knowledge is tobe treated as `open-source', `free-ware'
etc, and not to be jealously guarded, at least from non-hackers!

That reminds me, pilferage ofknowledge (hacking) is not something new! It seems
the Devas requested Kacha, the son of Brihaspati, the preceptor of Devas, to
infiltrate into school of the of preceptor of Asuras(Main Server), through
online-net-chatting on the `web' access, with a damselcalled Devayani (the
daughter of asura-preceptor, Sukracharya). The soft wareto be hacked was known
"Sanjivani'! The fall out was interesting.

Q3 Do the epics Ramayana and Mahabharata havereference to Gaya? If so on what
occasion?

A3Gaya finds mention in the great epics, Ramayana and Mahabharata. Rama

A4About the origin of the name ‘Gaya' as referred to in Vayu Purana that Gaya
wasthe name of a demon (Asura) whose body was pious after he performed
rigidpenance and secured blessings from Vishnu. It was said that the Gayasura's
bodywould continue to be known as Gaya Kshetra.

Q5 Is it incumbent upon all sonsto offer PINDA (oblations) for the salvation of
the soul of their ancestors. ?

A5 Yes . It would be incumbent upon all sons to offer PINDA(oblations) for the
salvation of the soul of their ancestors. All the 360 vedisfor pindadana were
located within this Pancha Kosi Gaya Kshetra.

Thesoul could be freed from the agonies of Hell and sent to Heaven by
performingGaya-Shraddha within this area. Gaya has been named after the demon.

Q9 What is the speciality of Akshaya thrithiya at Arasarkoil temple?

A9 Mythologically speaking, Kubera, the treasurer in Heaven received his wealth
on this day from Siva. It is onthis day Lord Siva blessed Goddess Lakshmi with
wealth. In fact LordSiva made Kubera as Lord of wealth and Lakshmi as Goddess
of wealth. Kuberaworshiped Lord Siva in the temple at Sivapuram.

Buried underneath the land surrounding the temple arethousands of Sivalingams.

Two people were born on this 3rd moon. One is Parasurama, the warrior
Brahmin(ahem!..I can put the collar up) who destroyed all his enemies and
thenbecame a sage.

The second one was Annapurani, a special form of Parvati whofeeds the hungry.
Annapurani fed Siva on this day.

Sivadisguised himself as a beggar (for Bikshaatana) and approached Annapurani
forfood. Siva’s begging is a symbolic act.

Also as per another legend connectedwith Arasar Koil,  LordGanesha seems to
have gifted the Akshaya bowl (divine vessel ofinexhaustible food) to Garuda
(the Vehicle of lord Vishnu).

Garuda worshiped Lakshmi who happens to residein this temple and Goddess
Lakshmi offered this Akshaya bowl in gold to Garuda.

Garuda while worshiping LordSurya Narayana (the sun god) offered food to the
deity in this golden Akshayabowl.

All the above incidences happened inArasar Koil temple only in the previous
Yugas.

In this temple, Lord Ganesha is infront of Goddess Mahalakshmi's Sanctum and is
known as Akshaya Vinayakar. He isalso known as Sri Lakshmi Ganapathy.

Q10 What is the importance of Vishnupathi ?

A10 Vishnupathy is a special daywhen money miracles happen.

Fourtimes in a year Vishnu performs money miracles for his devotees or those
whopray to him. The first miracle time for 2008 just passed in February 2008.

However asecond one is coming and it is May 14. This Vishnupathy is very
special as thistime as it falls on a Wednesday and Mercury rules Wednesday. he
presiding deityfor Mercury is Lord Vishnu. Vishnu and his consort Lakshmi are
in charge ofmoney and other material things.

The Siddhasare masters of time and advise that you cannot pray randomly.

There is a time to pray to each deity. For instance youshould pray to Ganesha
on the 4th moon, Muruga (Subramaniam) on the 6th moon,Bhairava on the 8th moon,
Vishnu on the 11th moon and Siva on the 13th moon andthe new moon.

Apart from the general, there arealso special days and times.

According toVedic tenets, VishnuYantra is the best way to worship Lord Vishnu.
Lord Vishnu is thesecond of the Trinities and is the preserver. Worship this
Yantra to accomplishyour targets, protect your heath from ailments and to
accumulate wealth. Thisalso protects you from negative forces.

Othikkans come from"Picha" or higher class of Namboothiris.

Other rituals like marriage arenot among the mandatory duties of Othikkan, but
of course, they certainly can assist in them too.Othikkans arecustomarily
invited for various functions and feasts in the family. In majorfeasts, the
seating protocol (Maanyasthhaanam) will be : Thampraakkal (ifpresent),
Vaidikan, Akkitharu, Chomaathiri, then Othikkan, followed by Aaddhyans. It is
not a commonpractice to give "Onappudava" and other gifts to Othikkans.
It may surprise some that even certain templeshave Othikkans. Guruvayur and
Trippunithura are examples. SuchOthikkans do not have much duties other than
performing the duties of theThanthri or the Melsaanthi during their Pula
(pollution) period.
