URULI Dear friends,
Today aftercleaning and drying my small uruli (of size 3.5 inches in diameter and 0.75inch height) I kept currency Rs 30-00 and glittering 20-00 rupees coins in it. 30-00 rupees arethe cash I got from a large jewellery shop after purchase, due to amiscalculation by them. Ifelt the cash is a treasure. The glittering coins I got from one of thebiggest private sector bank branch near to my home. Even now the 20-00 rupeescoins are not in circulation. The urulihas normal content of copper, hence not very bright. I thought today my postingcan be about metal vessel URULI. On search of Wikipedia I could gather there isa settlement and railway station in Maharashtra, named Uruli Kanchan. Sincerely, Gopalakrishnan7-1-2022 1. Uruli introduction Uruli (ഉരുളി) is a traditional cookwareextensively used in South Indian state of Kerala and few neighbouring places. It is also pronounced as Urli and commonly made of clay, copper and bronze. Urulis wereused in home for cooking and in Ayurveda to make medicines. Now Urulis are usedas a decorative bowl to float flowers which is a part of South Indiantradition. Clay urlis are available which we might have seen in TV shows formaking many preparations, Copper uruli is not common in south. 2. Varpuruli The uruli can befound in many traditional Malayali homes, which show them in several sizes, like the small ones that have a more decorative function or also the very large“varpuli”,that are used for cooking in feasts that require a big amount of food. Theseurulis are made of bell metal. Nowadays the largesize uruli is used in preparing nivedyams like Palpayasam in Ambalappuzha, sarkarapayasam in Sabarimala etc. In Vaikkam temple for Ashtami, cooking is done inlarge urulis. Large size uruli isvery heavy and requires two persons to carry. Large size uruli was transported keepingupside down on head of two persons on earlier days. Nowadays it is transportedin mini lorry keeping upside down. These urulis have proper tin and coppercontent and can be used for preparing any type of dishes. For keeping and taking out from the oven, its two ears are used. 2a. Sastha preethi and large size uruli During sasthapreethi saisavam( payasam) is essentially prepared in large size uruli andcarried in small uruli for nivedyam before deity. In some areas it is taken inKorikai for nivedyam. 3. Medium size uruli In most Kerala templesmedium size uruli is used nowadays to prepare nivedyam in madapalli and carriedin small size uruli to sanctum. Medium size uruliis kept in Ara, and taken out, cleaned and used for various functions 3a. Use in Vishukkani With its shallowcircular shape this vessel is also used to display the kani for the Malayalam New Year Vishu andthese days is present in many resorts and hotels decorations. Somehow for Kaniarrangement small uruli is not sufficient. Probably to get wealth from the Vishuday ,medium size uruli is used to keepthe fruits, vegetables, konnappoo, medium mirror, gold, currency etc. This type of uruliis used for preparing more items overLPG stove. Only thing because of the size of uruli next burner cannot be used. 4 Urlis filled with water Urlis filled withwater are a common sight, and this is believed to have special benefitsaccording to Vastu Shastra. Water is known tobe cooling and it signifies the flow of wealth towards you. For this reason, many Indian homeshave an urli in their entry way filled with water and other elements likeflowers. In Chennai it is a common sight in homes, shops, restaurants, marriage halls etc. to have such uruli nowadays. These uruli have more copper contentto keep the glittering appearance. 4a Directions To Place Uruli: At the Right sideentrance of the house. At the centre or southeast corner of the living room. At Northeast corner or Ishan corner of therespective place. Urulis with green andblue coloured flowers can be placed at the north or northeast corner. 5 Uruli Kamazhthal Pooja for Childless Couples : Mannarasala templein Haripad is one of the oldest temples for childless couples, where thechildless couples pray for childbirth. Uruli Kamazhthal isthe pooja performed inside this particular temple for childless couples. Poojaand worshiping here leads to removal or suppression of Kala Sarpa dosham or theNaga dosham. This pooja has helped many devotees to have children. These urulis have more brass contentand smaller in size of about one foot diameter and 3 inches height andglittering in appearance 6 Maintaining uruli Wash with water andwipe off the excess water with a cotton cloth. Make sure that to use cottoncloth for wiping off the excess water after rinsing your brass uruli. Failing will cause a formationof watermarks on the utensil which is hard to get rid of later. 7 Why is bronze so expensive? Bronze is usuallymore expensive than brass, partly due to the processes required to manufacture bronze. Anotherreason, tin which is required for the productionof bronze, is not abundantly available. Whereas, Kansa or Bronze does not react withsour acidic food hence, it is the best metal to eat and cook in. In Kerala Mannar near Alleppy and in Tamilnadu Nachiarkovil nearKaraikkudi are the places crafting bronze urulis. Famous artisans of Muradabadin North India also crafts urli using ancient sand casting techniques. 8 How humans discovered bronze? One theory suggeststhat bronze may have been discovered when copper and tin-rich rocks were usedto build campfire rings. As the stones became heated by the fire, the metalscontained in the rocks were melted and mixed. ... It is thought that Bronzeproperly appeared in the region around 3000 BC. 9 Whether bronze is toxic? Yes Bronze is toxic , but you need to consume a largeamount, or be exposed to it for a long period of time for any serious illeffects. Bronze reacts with oxygen to create verdigris, the greenish substance seen on bronze. This is toxic but yetagain prolonged exposure or a fairly large amount has to be consumed. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Thatha_Patty" group.
