Q3 Since we don'tdigest grass properly, how can we digest lettuce properly? A3 KarenJ Gray Have researched animals of all kinds throughout my life. Feb 5 Grass and lettuce are two very different things and there are reasons whyhumans don’t eat grass but do eat lettuce. Lettuce is quite soft, which grass is not and it’s notfull of silica like grass is and we’ve been selectively breedinglettuces for centuries to make them tasty and more pleasant to eat. Leavingaside the proponents of eating raw veggies, fact is that the human stomach has a fair bit of trouble digesting raw leaves.Your grasses are mostlyleaves and tough leaves at that. A ruminant such as a cow has a veryhandy four chambered stomach and tons of bacterial helpers to break down toughgrasses that it eats, so they don’t have any problems eating grass. Digestion aside, there’s anotherproblem with eating grass. It contains quite a bit of abrasive silica which isvery difficult to chew and wears down teeth quickly and our teeth aren’t madefor that. I’d hate to see the dental bills. Animals that eat grass generally have teeth that grow throughout theirlives so they can keep up with the wear from the grass. Q4 Why do printersnever work? A4 ChrisEverett American. Feb 17 Because that’s what people havedemanded. The common “home printer” is an all in one copier/printer/scannerthat prints in color, has a wireless router built in, and costs $100. Pretty impressive, yes? Of course note that “Worksreliably” isn’t on the list. People get what they ask for. Years and years ago,my family bought a black and white laser printer. It doesn’t have wireless, doesn’t print in color, yet has worked for years with basically zero issue. And on the rare occasion I needsomething printed in color, there’s a staples down the street that I can walkto, if so inclined. The reality is that we almost never need a color print. (OrI want photo quality that home printers can’t do anyway). Here’s the deal: Don’t buy an inkjet printer if you want a reliableprinter (unless you know exactly what you are doing… and you don’t). Makingan inkjet at an affordable price requires a stupendous number of designcompromises that make them unreliable and stupidly expensive per page. I’ll argue that in spite of theirhigher costs, color laser printers are much simpler than cheap ink jets are,and that makes them more reliable… And of course, B/W lasers are even simpler. But all printers are shockinglycomplicated bits of kit, with countless mechanical parts that have to workunder less than ideal conditions with exceptional repeatable accuracy, and witha user base that basically never performs any sort of maintenance on them. MY note- Cartridges are verycostly comparing to printer cost. Q5 What are the stepsinvolved in relocating a split air conditioner (AC)? A5 BelalBin Neyaz, Engineer - Projects at Fujitsu General (2017-present)Answered Feb26, 2019 On your outdoor compressor unitthere should be twopipes, one smaller diameter (high pressure) and a larger diameter pipe (lowpressure). Turn your AC on inside the house and thenshut off the valve on smaller diameter pipe. Run the unit for a around 3 to 4 minutesand then check if the cooling is reducing from the unit inside the house. Whenyou feel room temperature air (not cool) being emitted from the indoor unit shut off the valve on largerdiameter pipe and turn off unit. Isolate electrics, disconnect AC pipingand immediately seal the piping with good quality tape to prevent from dirt. When re-installing a quick purge of gas is usually only required to clear thelines if they were sealed properly and kept clean. Ideally running a vacuumpump is recommended but if care was taken then it may not be needed. It is better to done by or in presence of certified technician. 2nd answer-Mohammed Harris, former HVAC (1990-2019)AnsweredOct 21, 2020 01. Recovery of Freon from indoorunit to outdoor unit.02. Isolation of power supply.03. Removing pipe linesconnection and closing of ports.04. Removal indoor and outdoor units andremoval stand and holders. 2nd answer-Karthik Unik, BE Mechanical Engineering, SaveethaEngineering College, Thandalam (2018) Answered Dec 11, 2020 Split A/C replacement procedure Ensure the power supply isdisconnected. Have to releaserefrigerant gas near outdoor unit/ condensing unit. Carefully disconnect copper pipe bothsuction and liquid line which comes from indoor unit. Check condition of copper pipe andcopper pipe insulation if oxidation found it's better replace copper pipe butinsulation replacement is compulsery. Now select the new location Connect indoor and outdoor unitthrough copper pipe and insulate the copper pipe. Refill refrigerant . Check on power supply . My note- Get the companytechnician , who would do the work very efficiently Q6 Why do people hatewhen restaurants use microwaves to heat up foods when they probably do it athome all the time? A6 MartinBayer Chef (1994–present)Feb 14 People go to restaurants to havefood prepared for them. Sincethey’re paying and waiting for that food, expectations are usually high. Microwaves don’t really cook food. They make it hot and can turn rawfoods into cooked, but they don't develop color or flavor, like grillor hot saute pan will. For that reason they aren’t respected as a cookingdevice. They’re what people use at home to reheat leftovers and pop popcorn. So, if I go out to eat and discoverthat the meal I waited and paid for was prepared in a popcorn popper, I’m goingto be a little let down. I want a little more effort for my money. Giving mydinner a spin in the juke box just doesn’t cut the mustard. Almost every restaurant has a microwave, even the ones you wouldn’texpect to have one. They’re a super useful tool, nothing can reallyduplicate what they do with the same speed and efficiency. There’s nothingwrong with using one to prep ingredients, or even heat finished products forserving. They aren't for cooking steaks and such though. Q7 How often shouldanyone wash their sheets and bed? A7 VenkateswaraSwamy Swarna, former Scientist, Metallurgist, Quality / NDT Manager atDepartment of Atomic Energy, India (1967-2008)Answered 2h ago The bed sheets need washing when I,the person sleeping on them, feel the need. The bed (mattress) does not getwashed. It is too heavy and I am not sure it is water proof. So, only bed sheets get changed and washed. Same thing with pillow coverstoo. Howoften should anyone wash their sheets and bed? 2nd answer-Gopala Krishnan, former Assistant General Manager1996-2004 at Department of Telecom (1966-2004) Answered just now I am writing this answer fromChennai, India. Most homes now use foam beds. These can be dried only insunlight. Bed spread, bed sheet, pillow covers are washed oncea week now due to covid 19 situation. Otherwise it was once in ten days.Liquids like Dettol is added during washing. Washed in hot water. There is an all-round comfort feltwith new bed spread, sheet and pillow covers. If a guest has used washed bedspread etc, after his leaving all are washed irrespective of the hours/days hehas used. Q8 Is it really truethat if you are in space that you can not see the sun or the stars unless thereis a solid object of mass to be able to reflect off of? A8 GaneshSubramaniam Amateur Radio Operator, Amateur Astronomer Feb 11 No, it is not true. If you are inouter space, you can very well see the Sunor the stars. What youcannot see is the light itself that is all around you. What it means is, the Sun and thestars emit light – and so are visible to you. But the light waves – the rays of light – that arebetween you and the celestial objects – cannot be ‘seen’ unless there are otherobjects that reflect that light. The brightest beam of light passingin front of you is invisible to you – but you can see it if there is somethingthat reflects it – be it a solid object, gas – such as smoke, or liquid – likewaver droplets. In other words, you are aware of the existence of light onlywhen it reflects off some object. Take a look at these photos: In the above image, you can seethat the flashlight is turned on – but you do not see the ‘beam’ of light whichis there. It is dark. (You can see the front end of the flashlight because it isilluminated. I have intentionally included that in the photo as otherwise theimage will be totally dark). I then introduced some smoke in front of theflashlight: In the above image, the smoke inthe air is reflecting the light from the flashlight and so you see the smoke. But you don’t ‘see’ the light between the flashlight and the smoke. In short, Light itself cannot beseen but reveals everything in its presence. Q9 How long should anair conditioner sit before turning it on? A9 WileyWon, Owner at IT Support Services (1996-present)Answered Jun 6,2021Congratulations for knowing that it needs to sit for some amount of time. Most people don’t think about that. Firing it up immediately after it has beenshut down can damage the motor or compressor or both. It needs to stay off only longenough for the high compression side and low compression side to equalize. Tenminutes ought to be enough. 2nd answer-Bruce Whiteside, B.S. Engineering, Southern IllinoisUniversity Carbondale (1973)Answered Jun 8, 2020 There is no hard number. The concern is that that thecompressor needs lubrication and it gets this from the oil that is normally inthe bottom of the compressor housing. Rough handling, especially turningthe AC over or leaving it on its side, can cause the oil to move from thecompressor to other parts of the system. So, if the unit has been storedupright and simply lifted to a window opening, then a few minutes should befine. If, however, the unit was in its box, upside down, for a shaky ride homeand then unpacked an installed, I would give it more time. I would check theinstructions for advice or call the makes support line and ask. 3rd answer-Vincent Licari, Carpenter at Self-Employment(1999-present) Answered Jun 10, 2020 Under what circumstances ? Justinstalled ? Has it been up side down ? There's a lot of dogma about this, someplausible, some just parroting. For the most part the worst that will actuallyhappen is compressor cylinders will become logged with oil or liquidrefrigerant, in the case of oil it will stay there until it gets pumped out byPiston, sitting for 10 years isn't going to allow cylinders to drain. If it'sliquid refrigerant it will also stay there unless there is a drastic differencein temp somewhere in which case the liquid refrigerant will slowly migrate tothe coldest point. In these two cases two things can happen, one, it will tryand fail to start causing overload to open ( which isn't ideal but it's notgoing to destroy the compressor either) two, it will start and quickly pumpliquid out ( is it possible it will cause damage ? Possible sure but highlyunlikely) when your refrigerator ices up you will have similar situation, refrigerant liquid will come back to compressor, but the difference is thatwill be continuous and ( but much worse because it will cause oil to foam andwash out of crankcase) you will be able to hear the difference in the sound ofcompressor. Honestly these things are not that fragile, I've heard some say itcould shear crank or bend rod but that's absolutely nonsense, it doesn't havethe power to destroy itself in that way unless the innards are made of fudge !I have seen large (10–20 hp and more) compressors rattle themselves to piecesdue to liquid in crankcase but that's once they are running when all that massis already in motion. Now have I been on the inside of a 1/4 hp compressorunder these conditions ? No ! I can tell you from experience they are not thatfragile Q10 Why should you stopeating 3 hours before bed? A10 DanteWong APAC Risk Analyst, UX Writer, and Narrative Designer Fri If I followed this “rule”, I would be naught but a bag ofskin and bones now.I dislike all these “rules” because they failto do the simplest of things, which is to take into account that everyone’smetabolism and body works differently. What works for you is notnecessarily going to work for me. That’s why when I see people goingon and on about how we should all adopt the keto diet or stop eating carbs orstop eating after 7 or whatever, a picture plays out in my noggin’ where if Iwere to actually follow that rule, all my ribs would be sticking out and Iwould be able to pluck them as finely as strings on a well-tuned guitar. Myrule is pretty simple: I eat when I’m hungry. All the above QA are from Quora website on 22-02- 2022. Quoraanswers need not be 100% correct answers Compiled and posted by R.
