QUES ANSW MEDICAL  07-2022-04

Dear friends,

These are information compiled as QA by me in1998’s-2014’s and stored in my
computer. They are posted by very  learnt doctors in kidshealth.org etc.

Manyimprovements have come in medical field. Hence some information may have
additions or some times changes.

These are for general information, and for  any health problem one has to
consult doctor.

BEING COMPILATION THERE MAYBE  ERRORS.

Sincerely,

R. Gopalakrishnan, 78, dated 04-07-2022

Q1         Do age tell upon sleep?

A1  Yes.About half of all people over 65 have frequent sleeping problems, such
asinsomnia, and deep sleep stages in many elderly people often become very
shortor stop completely. This change may be anormal part of aging, or it may
result from medical problems that are common inelderly people and from the
medications andother treatments for those problems.

My note- I haveobserved  certain medicines increaseblood sugar, create
constipation and insomania

Q2          Why should we sleep? Is it necessary?

A2           Although scientists are still tryingto learn exactly why people
need sleep, animal studies show that sleep is necessary for survival.

Q3         What is Circadian rhythms and its effect on biologicalclock  ?

A3          Circadian rhythms are regular changes in mental and
physicalcharacteristics that occur in the course of a day (circadian is Latin
for "around a day"). Mostcircadian rhythms are controlled by the body's
biological "clock."

This clock, called the suprachiasmatic nucleus or SCN, is actually a pair of
pinhead-sizedbrain structures that together contain about 20,000 neurons.

The SCN restsin a part of the brain called the hypothalamus, just above
thepoint where the optic nerves cross. Light that reaches photoreceptors in
theretina (a tissue at the back of the eye) creates signals that travel along
theoptic nerve to the SCN.

Signals fromthe SCN travel to several brain regions, includingthe pineal gland,
which responds to light-induced signals by switching offproduction of the
hormone melatonin. The body's level of melatonin normally increasesafter
darkness falls, making people feel drowsy.
Q3         Do biological clock work on 25 hour cycle?
A3          By depriving people of light and otherexternal time cues,
scientists have learned that most people's biologicalclocks work on a 25-hour
cycle rather than a 24-hour one.

Q4         What is jet log?

A4         Whentravelers pass from one time zone to another, they suffer from
disruptedcircadian rhythms, an uncomfortable feeling known as jet lag. For
instance, if you travel from California to New York, you "lose" 3hours
according to your body's clock. Youwill feel tired when the alarm rings at 8
a.m. the next morning because, according to your body's clock, it is still 5 a.m

It usuallytakes several days for your body's cycles to adjust to the new time.

My note- Itis understood, if a person frequently travel between placed with
differenttimezones, jetlag is not much felt. Readers can comment on their
experience.

Q5 How to reduce jet logeffect?

A5 To reducethe effects of jet lag, some doctors try to manipulate the
biologicalclock with a technique called light therapy.

They exposepeople to special lights, many times brighter than ordinary
household light, for several hours near the time the subjects want to wake
up.This helps them reset their biological clocks and adjust to a new time zone.

Q6Do similar symptoms like jet log happen to workers on shift duty?

A6 Symptomsmuch like jet lag are common in people who work nights or who
perform shiftwork.

Because thesepeople's work schedules are at odds with powerful sleep-regulating
cues likesunlight, they often become uncontrollably drowsy during work, andthey
may suffer insomnia or other problems when they try to sleep.

Shift workers have an increased risk of heartproblems, digestive disturbances,
and emotional and mental problems, all ofwhich may be related to their sleeping
problems. Thenumber and severity of workplace accidents also tend to increase
during thenight shift

Q7         What is Sleep until sunlight?

A7          If possible, wakeup with the sun, or use very bright lights in
themorning.

Sunlight helpsthe body's internal biological clock reset itself each day. Sleep
experts recommend exposure to an hour of morning sunlight forpeople having
problems falling asleep.

Q8            Do blinking is good for the eye?

A8         Consciously remind yourself to blink every 3-5 seconds. Ofcourse,
you don't want to go through the day with a stopwatch, but the more conscious
youare of blinking regularly, the better it is for your eyes.

The eyelid is the only part ofthe body that is controlled by just one muscle.
Any other movement usuallyinvolves 2 muscles – one that contracts and one that
stretches to make themovement. Your eyelid is controlled byonly one muscle. By
having proper relaxation in that muscle, it can promoterelaxation throughout
the entire body. That's why you often hear hypnotists using the phrase"your
eyes are becoming heavy" as a way to get their subject tobecome more relaxed.

A blinking exercise that you canpractice frequently throughout the day is
called Flutter Blinking.

To practice Flutter Blinking, blink your eyes lightly and rapidly 10 to 20
times. Do not strain or squeezeyour eyes shut and relax your face as you blink.
Then close your eyes andrelax. Repeat this 2 or 3 times. Flutter Blinking will
help to keep your eyes moist, relaxed and free of strain.

Q9              What'sa Phobia?

A9        phobia (say: fo-bee-uh) is the fancy name for a fear. But a phobia
isn't just any kindof fear. It's normal for kids to be afraid of things — like
taking a hard testat school, passing a growling dog on the street, or hearing a
huge clap ofthunder.

A kid who has a phobia will beafraid of something every time he or she sees or
experiences it. She won't justbe afraid once or twice. Kids who have phobias
often go out of their way toavoid the situation or thing that scares them.

My note- Phobia with a person doesnotdisappear. It continues till their end

Q10              Whydo digestive and urinary system slow done whenyou are in
anxiety?

A10               And your digestive and urinary systems slow down forthe
moment so you can concentrate on more important things.

My note- Both I have experienced. If busy with aninteresting work, hunger as
well as thinking for going totoilet doesnot appear for hours. But if I am idle
I would have eaten small snackitems and gone to toilet at least three times in
a period of three hours.

Q11              Dothe ear help to hear only?

A11               The ear not only helps us hear, but also keeps us steady on
our feet.

Kids need to hear well to developand use their speech, social, and listening
skills. Even mild or partialhearing loss can affect their ability to speak and
understand language, whileproblems with balance can influence how they're able
to move and how well theyfeel.

Q12              Howdo we hear?

A12               Hearing begins when sound waves that travel through theair
reach the outer ear, or pinna (the visible part of the ear). The outer ear
captures the sound vibration and sendsit through the ear canal to the middle
ear, which contains the eardrum (a thin layer of tissue) andthree tiny bones
(called ossicles). The sound causes the eardrum to vibrate. The ossicles amplify
these vibrations and carry them to the inner ear.
