OPPORTUNITY AND SUCCESS
The term ‘Veda’ means knowledge, while its derivative ‘Vedic’ means
knowledgeable. In other words, a Vedic human being is an individual who
practices the collective wisdom of the Vedas, in all walks of life. And the
only opportunity is learning and brimming with the knowledge to create that
opportunity; and all the rest , are fluke or false personification or the
chance. Chance may twist your arms in majority and place in a high pedestal
to be dropped down dead.

Halting has been declared to be of two kinds:—(1) that which is necessary
for one who has become gradually weakened, either by chance or through
previous acts, and (2) that which is necessitated by considerations for his
ally.—(166):‘Halting’ means the withdrawing of oneself. This also is of two
kinds—(1) When the king is “weakened’—in force and in money,—even though he
be prosperous, he has to ignore bis enemy; and another kind of Halting is
that which is done in consideration of the ally. If the relations of his
ally, who is weak, with the enemy is not such as to make it safe for his
ally to rise against that enemy,—then, in consideration of the delicate
position of his ally, the king should ‘halt’.The said ‘weakness’ arises
from two causes:—it may be due to ‘chance’ or to ‘former acts’. This only
describes the actual state of things. The strength and weakness of all
kings are due to these two causes. ‘Chance’ here stands for the man’s want
of care, e.g., extravagance, in alertness regarding the army and so forth;
and ‘former acts’ means the demerit caused by evil deeds in the past. Or
the explanation of the two terms may be reversed (‘former acts’ standing
for carelessness, and ‘chance’ for past misdeeds). ‘Mohāt’ (‘through
folly’) is another reading (for ‘daivāt’, ‘by chance’); but what is meant
is expressed by the term ‘daiva’,—(166) ‘Daivāt pūrvakṛtena’—‘In
consequence of imprudence during present life,—and in consequence of acts
committed during previous existences’ (Medhātithi, Govindarāja and
Kullūka);—‘by an enemy made formerly’ (Nārāyaṇa). Opportunity is by
chance; deivath is vidhi fate; exertion is the efforts; and exertions with
the desire to achieve or to cater to the needs of public as selfless
efforts, alone will lead kindly light to success and failure will be a
stepping stone. This why, Rig vedam says the following verses as far as the
economy is concerned,
EARN WEALTH BY GLORY: नृवत् । ते । इन्द्र । नृतमाभिः । ऊती ।

“Let a mortal be ever desirous of affluence, (having acquired it), let him
worship with oblations on the path of the sacrifice; and let him with his
own intellect meditate upon (the gods); let him grasp with his mind the
best and most mighty (of the universal deities).”
3 RISE UP EARLY MORNING WEALTH: “Having come in the early morning,
(Svanaya) presents precious (wealth), knowing it (to be worthy of
acceptance); and having, (therefore), accepted it, (Kakṣīvat) brings it (to
his father); wherewith the parent of excellent sons, maintaining his
progeny, passes his life in the enjoyment of affluence.”
Legend: Kakṣīvat, having finished his course of study, and taken leave of
his preceptor, journeyed homewards. As he fell asleep by the road-side,
Rājā Svanaya, the son of Bhāvavyavya, attended by his retinue, came by and
disturbed the brāhmaṇa's slumber. Rājā was struck by Kakṣīvat's person
nality and got the latter married to ten of his daughters, presenting him
with a hundred niṣkas of gold, a hundred horses, a hundred bulls, one
thousand and sixty cows and eleven four-horse-drawn-chariots (one each the
wives and one for Kakṣīvat). Kaksīvat returned home and presented the gifts
to his father, Dīrghatamas. The hymn is a praise of the munificence of
Svanaya

4 BEGET WEALTH BY PROPER MEANS: “Beget for us, Savitā, wealth today,
