We all learned the five senses in elementary school: sight, smell, hearing,
taste and touch. But did you know we actually have seven senses? The two
lesser-known senses are vestibular and proprioception and they are
connected to the tactile sense (touch).
Vestibular sense involves movement and balance. It is the sense of where
our body is in space. Close your eyes for a minute and take a quick
inventory of your body. Even without seeing or touching, you know where
your arms and legs are in space. Vestibular sense is important because it
helps us stand, walk and sit up without falling over.
Proprioception is also called body awareness sense. This sense helps us
understand where our body parts are in relation to each other. It also
helps us figure out how much force to use in different activities (think of
picking up a fragile glass versus a gallon of milk).
These two senses help round out our ability to connect and interact with
the world around us. Vestibular and proprioception, when combined with our
other five senses, are referred to as sensory processing. Sensory
processing is crucial for motor, speech, cognitive, learning, social,
attention and behavioural development.
The Senses.
Sight or vision
Hearing or audition
Smell or olfaction
Taste or gustation
Touch or tactition
However, neurologists would count, and agree on, at least nine senses. A
broadly acceptable definition of a sense for neurologists would be a group
of sensory cells that responds to a specific physical phenomenon, and that
corresponds to a particular region of the brain where the signals are
received and interpreted. Some things that we lay-folks might refer to as
“senses”, such as the sense of direction for instance, are defined by
neurologists as post-sensory cognitive activities and don’t count in this
definition
symbols representing the five senses
Because there is some overlap between different senses, different methods
of neurological classification can yield as many as 21 senses. And this
number does not include some physiological experiences such as, for
instance, the sensation of hunger or thirst. Generally agreed senses for
neuroscientists currently include:
Thermoception - the sense of heat (there is some debate that the sense of
cold may be a separate sense)
Nociception - the perception of pain
Equilibrioception - the perception of balance
Proprioception - the perception of body awareness (close your eyes and
touch your nose. Got it first time? That's proprioception in action)
Not happy with up to 21? Eco-psychologist Michael J Cohen puts the number
of senses at our disposal at 53. His definition of a sense goes beyond the
physiological phenomenon/nerve sensor definition. He breaks the senses down
into four categories:
The radiation senses: sense of colour, sense of moods associated with
colour, sense of temperature.
The feeling senses: sensitivity to gravity, air and wind pressure, and
motion.
The chemical senses: hormonal sense, such as pheromones, hunger for food,
water or air.
The mental senses: pain, external and internal, mental or spiritual
distress, sense of self, including friendship, companionship and power,
psychic capacity.
Cohen’s point is that we are all sensory creatures and that our human
senses are a large part of who we are. Our senses are given to us not to be
indulged, to be playthings or for decoration, but are mechanisms originally
designed to help us survive and thrive in the natural world. Because life
in the “developed” world is now so confined (Americans for instance spend
an average of 95% of their lives indoors) our senses have little to do and
consequently become either atrophied or over-sensitive, which in turn leads
to many of the common ailments of today’s existence, such as stress,
anxiety and depression.
You've probably been taught that humans have five senses: taste,
smell, vision, hearing, and touch. However, an under-appreciated "sixth
sense," called proprioception, allows us to keep track of where our body
parts are in space
The senses that protect the individual from external and internal
perturbations through a contact delivery of information to the brain
include the five senses, the proprioception, and the seventh sense—immune
input. The peripheral immune cells detect microorganisms and deliver the
information to the brain. (7th sense)
Interoception is a sense that provides information about the internal
condition of our body, how our body is feeling on the inside. Interoception
allows us to experience many body sensations such as a growling stomach, a
dry mouth, tense muscles or a racing heart. (8th sense)
VEDIC 11 senses: Mind was called by Indian psychologists the eleventh
and ranks as the supreme sense. In the ancient arrangement of the senses,
five of knowledge and five of action, it was the sixth of the organs of
knowledge and at the same time the sixth of the organs of action. It is a
common-place of psychology that the effective functioning of the senses of
knowledge is inoperative without the assistance of the mind; the eye may
see, the ear may hear, all the senses may act, but if the mind pays no
attention, the man has not heard, seen, felt, touched or tasted. Similarly,
according to psychology, the organs of action act only by the force of the
mind operating as will or, physiologically, by the reactive nervous force
from the brain which must be according to materialistic notions the true
self and essence of all will. In any case, the senses or all senses, if
there are other than the ten,—according to a text in the Upanishad there
should be at least fourteen, seven and seven,—all senses appear to be only
organisations, functioning, instrumentations of the mind-consciousness,
devices which it has formed in the course of its evolution in living Matter.
Section 240, Mokshadharma Parva, Santi Parva, The Mahabharata]
SECTION CCXL
"Vyasa said, ….The uniting together of Intellect and Mind, and all the
Senses, and the all-pervading Soul is said to be Knowledge of the foremost
kind. That Knowledge should be acquired (through the preceptor's aid) by
one that is of a tranquil disposition, that has mastered his senses, that
is capable (by meditation) of turning his gaze on the Soul, that takes a
pleasure in (such) meditation, that is endued with intelligence and pure in
acts. One should seek to acquire this Knowledge by abandoning those five
impediments of Yoga which are known to the wise, viz., desire, wrath,
cupidity, fear, and sleep. Wrath is conquered by tranquillity of
disposition. Desire is conquered by giving up all purposes. By reflecting
with the aid of the understanding upon topics worthy of reflection, 1 one
endued with patience succeeds in abandoning sleep. By steady endurance one
should restrain one's organs of generation and the stomach (from unworthy
or sinful indulgence). One should protect one's hands and feet by (using)
one's eyes. One should protect one's eyes and ears by the aid of one's
mind, one's mind and speech by one's acts. One should avoid fear by
heedfulness, and pride by waiting upon the wise. Subduing procrastination,
one should, by these means, subdue these impediments of Yoga
2 Brahma became the eye, in the form of this mobile and immobile universe,
of all entities that took birth.
3 Meditation, study, gift, truth, modesty, simplicity, forgiveness, purity
of body, purity of conduct, subjugation of the senses, these enhance one's
energy, which (when enhanced) destroys one's sins. By behaving equally
towards all creatures and by living in contentment upon what is acquired
easily and without effort, one attains to the fruition of all one's objects
and succeeds in obtaining knowledge.
4 Firmly uniting the senses and the mind (having drawn them away from all
external objects) with gaze fixed inwards, one should, in the still hours
of evening or in those before dawn, place one's mind upon the knowledge. If
even one of the five senses of a human being be kept unrestrained, all his
wisdom may be seen to escape through it like water through an unstopped
hole at the bottom of a leather bag. Indeed, having restrained the five
senses, the Yati should fix them on the mind. *When these the mind for
their sixth become concentrated* in the knowledge, and thus concentrated
remain steady and untroubled, thene everything then appears in it and it
appears in everything in consequence of its infinitude.
He that has subdued his mind beholds in his own self, by the aid of his own
knowledge the Uncreate, Ancient, Undeteriorating, and Eternal Brahma--That,
viz., which cannot be attained to except by fixed senses,--That which is
subtler than the most subtle, and grosser than the most gross, and which is
Emancipation's self.' (BG in 13-6&7 speaks the same)
Upanishadic sages thousands of years ago understood the secrets of
neuroscience, but going beyond the physical body and mind to higher levels
of consciousness.
For example, Agni or fire is speech, Vayu or air is Prana, Surya or the Sun
is perception, space or the directions is hearing, and the Moon (Soma) is
the mind in its contemplative nature. Aitareya Upanishad – Upanishadic View
of Evolution;the Aitareya Upanishad (AU I.1) describes the universe as a
manifestation of the Self (Atman) through its power of vision. This means
that everything manifested is a form of the Self or self-awareness.It then
describes the creation of the worlds (lokas) as five, the heavenly waters,
heaven, atmosphere, earth, and the waters beneath the earth. The waters
symbolize the vibratory waves of consciousness-space in which all the
worlds are held.It then describes the guardians of the worlds starting with
the Purusha, indicating that the entire universe has the form of the human
being or human body and exists in the brain. The other world guardians
(loka palas) consist of Agni, from the mouth and speech of the Purusha;
Vayu from the nose and the prana of the Purusha; the Sun from the eyes and
vision of the Purusha; the directions of space from the ears and hearing of
the Purusha; plants and trees from the skin and hairs of the Purusha; the
Moon from the mind and the heart of the Purusha,; death from the navel and
apana vayu of the Purusha; and the waters from the sex organ and the seed
of the Purusha. The Taittiriya Upanishad I.13-14 has an important teaching
in this regard: “He is that space within the heart, in that is the Purusha
whose nature is mind (Mano maya Purusha), who is immortal and golden.
Within the palate, which hangs down like the breast, that is the womb of
Indra (Indra yoni). Where the end of the hair parts, having opened the top
of the skull, he dwells as Agni in the Earth, as Vayu in the Atmosphere, as
the Sun in Heaven, as the Vast in Brahman.
Astrology speaks altogether in terms of space movements of a certain
planets connecting the SOMA THE MIND. 1.Sight- Your eyesight is ruled by
planet Mars (Agni tattwa). When mars is under affliction or weakly placed,
it gives problems with sight 2. Hearing- Our hearing power is influenced by
Jupiter (Akash tattwa). The weak position of Jupiter results in hearing
problems. Also, we should note that Jupiter get debilitated in the
nakshatra of Shravana. 3.Touch-Saturn (Vayu tattwa) rules touch and thus,
it influences our connectivity with the people too. When Saturn is
negatively influenced or under severe affliction, one may feel
disconnected. 4.Taste- Venus rules over taste element in life. You know
that Venus is jala element. Venus controls all type of relationships and
thus, its positive placements can bring lot of happiness and prosperity.
5.Smell – Mercury rules over our smell. In astrology, mercury belongs to
Prithvi tattwa.
Finally, about the INTUTION AND ASTROLOGY Astrology assessed by texts
and book knowhow, may not lead to the accurate results; that is why ancient
astrologers had Puja and punaskaras with the meditations and Gayathri to
keep the mind the access to analyse unknowing to themselves, which is THE
INTUTIONS. So, all aspects analysed in the astrology is sanctified only by
the utterances through the INTUTIONS. Intuitions are not mere gut feelings
as west describes; it is from the mind; the power of a yogi; siddha
purushas; and energy of the brain waves to assess. For example: Sri
Krishnamurthi writes in his book Krishnamurthy patthathi a system of Ayana
he evolved, as: One day a lady crying rushed in his chamber, begging
Krishnamurthy, to say bout her union with her husband; at the same time, as
it used to be then, from the back side of the well, his wife was shouting
the bucket went inside the water cutting down the rope; his shishyas said,
murmuring,: that is all; saguna is not good; rope is cut”. But K
calculated and found the date of something to her question; no there are 2
options; one rope is cut so she loses the thali; but K got the intuition to
after the analysis of the planets at that time and the saguna, and said to
her that she will unite with her husband on such and such a date; and when
the shishyas were surprised, he told them, rope cut is natural as it became
older; but why a bucket shall reach the water her companion? Intuition is
not dice game; hit and run; but analysis; strategic analysis now the
management termed as. Astrology is wedded to intuition and discipline to
practice. Intuition is a cult. MESHA, Mithuna, Kataka and Meena rasis are
generally endowed with the intuition. Jupiter, Bhudan, Moon and Ketu play a
role in intuition. As the moon is the main component and Kataka rasi is
highly connected to the moon, they are the best as astrologers. Ketu is
another planet of intuition; and Ketu is 12 enhances the quality of a Yogi,
so moon and ketu in 12th place is a person with intuition. Jupiter must be
well placed for any astro.

*Respected Sir/s,*
*SUBJECT: SIXTH SENSE*
*I**f someone says he has **a sixth sense**, means that he seems to have **a
natural ability to know about things before others or to know things that
other people do not know.*
*INTUTIVE POWER,* *a power of perception beyond the five senses.*
* An ability to know something without using the ordinary five senses
of sight, hearing, smell, touch, and taste: My sixth sense told me
something awful was going to happen.*
*How to activate the sixth sense*
*1. **Regular meditation. This is the easiest way to work on the
sixth sense. ...*
*2. **Practise Trataka**. This is another easy way to awaken
sixth sense. ...*
*3. **Connect with Nature. ...*
*4. **Keep a record of dreams. ...*
*5. **Perform Pranayama. ...*
*6. **Feel The Vibes(emotional feeings)*
*It is a cumulative power of all our other senses - sight, sound, taste,
touch, smell - that culminates in a stronger sense of inner knowing. Some
people may have a natural ability to use their sixth sense, while others
may need to develop it through practice and training.*
*INTUTION**, also known as a gut feeling*, *instinct **, sixth sense,or
second senseplays ; a significant role in navigating life's challenges and
musterious paths. According to Vedic astrology, some zodiac signs are more
attuned to their intuition power than others making them adept at sensing
and understanding the unseen.*
*In today's generation, this feeling is often referred to as a *
*'vibe.**' **Individuals commonly have a gut feeling about something or
someone, which can surprisingly turn out to be accurate.** This phenomenon
is known as intuition, defined as the ability to sense or know things
without conscious reasoning.*
* 1. **CANCER**- Individuals born under the Cancer sign are natural
nurturers, deeply connected to their emotions and feelings due to their
governance by the Moon. **Their strong and instinctive intuition allows
them to take care of themselves and their loved ones. **Cancers can
perceive the moods, feelings, and needs of others without explicit
communication, providing warmth, security, and comfort.* *Their intuitive
abilities often manifest in creating a cozy and harmonious home
environment, fostering strong and lasting bonds with family and friends.*
*2. SCORPIO - Highly emotional individuals, Scorpios value forming deep
relationships **based on trust and seek emotional intimacy. **Ruled by *
*Pluto**, **they possess intense and transformational intuition. **Known
for their sharp-witted intuition**, Scorpios can **sense hidden objectives,
feelings, and intentions, **making them less susceptible to deception. **They
use their intuition as a protective mechanism for themselves and their
loved ones.*
*3. PISCES – Pisceans are dreamers and visionaries of the zodiac, with a
profound ability to connect deeply with the artistic tapestry of
nature. **Highly
spiritual and intuitive, they use their intuition to align with their
life's purpose and manifest their dreams and desires**. Their rich and
vivid imagination aids in connecting with subtle energies and vibrations of
the universe, allowing them to **receive messages and guidance from their
soul, spirit guides, or angels**.*
*4. SAGITTARIUS - **Ruled by Jupiter, the planet of expansion, Sagittarians
have a deep desire for freedom and exploration. **They are always curious
and optimistic about discovering new and exciting things**. **Sagittarians
use their intuition power to sense opportunities, possibilities, and
potentials in any situation.** Employing their intuition, they explore new
cultures, philosophies, and experiences, broadening their horizons
continually.*
