Q1           Whatis a funny story that happened due to language barrier?

A1           Stephen Yeung, Lives in Singapore UpdatedNov 2

This happeneddecades ago in Japan. I called hotel room service for a bottle of
7 Up. Waited for a while, no 7Up. Called the reception again and was assured
all was ok. Waited for anotherlong while, still no 7 Up. 24 hour convenience
stores were not as popular then,so I decided to call it a night and headed to
bed. The next morning at 7 am, I received a wake-upcall from the receptionist
on duty. 😅

P.S. Updates toanswer some of the questions raised:

Whenever I travel overseas, I would speakEnglish unless I know the local
language. Japanese is not one of them.

From past experiences, it is much easier forthe locals, who are not fluent in
English, to understand global brand namessuch as 7 Up, instead of generic names
like lemonade.

I did notspecifically highlight to the receptionist when I called the second
time that Iwas looking for a drink. It did not occur to me that there was
amisunderstanding. I thought my earlier order did not get through.

Q3           Itseems like there is a decline in interest in civil engineering
compared to someother areas. Is this accurate? If so, should this be a concern
and why is ithappening?

A3           Shubham Bhargava, Studied CivilEngineering Jan 29

It is absolutelytrue because the Civil engineering companies doesn't care about
how muchcompetent and knowledgeable you are. Your salary will be directly
proportionalto the no.of experience you have. But same is not applicable in
otherengineering branches. Take the case of IT industry - Your salary will be
proportionalto your knowledge and competency not the number of experience you
have onpaper.

That's one of thereason, Elite college students and sharp minds don't go in the
civilengineering industry even when they complete their engineering in civil
engineering.

Moreover, As we arehearing every other day, that bridge is collapse, bridge has
an incident. Thereason is the same hiring of incompetent engineers by the
construction andconsulting companies to make more profit. If they hire
competent engineer theyhave to pay more so for saving and earning more profit
they hire incompetentengineer. That’s the sad reality of civil engineering
industry in India. Notjust in small and local projects but in big
bilateral/multilateral fundedprojects also. It is what it is. Nobody is coming
forward to address thisissue, it will be a big problem in coming years as India
is a developingcountry and development needs to be done to achieve 5 trillion
economy. (If thebilateral/multilateral banks will get to know about the
competency of engineersthey can withdraw the investment also)

The absence ofregulations has led to the entry of unqualified individuals
lacking adequateknowledge of civil engineering, resulting in the construction
of inferiorquality of roads, infrastructure, and unsafe buildings that affect
the lowerand middle-income groups. Instances of building failures have
adverselyaffected the morale of professional civil engineers, leading to a
shortage ofcompetent practitioners due to a decline in the enrollment of
passionatestudents in academic institutions

That's one of thereason, If some competent engineer sustained in industry after
getting fewyears of experience in India, they will definitely move to abroad
for theircareer growth as growth is not there at all in India and the companies
leftwith incompetent options in the market. That's the sad reality of the
civilengineering industry that the government is not addressing.

Time will come whenbright Indian engineers will be working in western countries
and Governmentwill have to invite applicants from African and other poor asian
countries towork in India for the infrastructure projects to sustain the
economy.

Also, that is notjust my point of view. Every other experienced practitioner
talk about it.Don't believe me? Read the article by yourself which is published
by The Hindu.

I hope experiencedengineers of Indian origin like Gopalkrishna Vishwanath, Dr.
Balaji Viswanathanagree with me.

Q4           Whatwas one of the most shocking scientific findings in history?

A4           Alessandro13,Apr 24

The discovery ofcave drawings in northern Spain by a Cambridge University team
suggests thatprehistoric inhabitants also had a host of inner demons, nagging
worries andanxieties as they struggled with the demands of life in the
Paleolithic Age.

According to leadresearcher Alan Reddy, the images found on the limestone walls
and ceiling ofthe cave date back to around 14,000 BC, and offer insight into
the little-knownpsychological situation of ancient populations.

Q5           Whatare the most mind-blowing facts about the humanbrain?

A5            Singh,An Engineer who build thisworld a happy place for livingSun

*The surprise hasarrived!*

The director of theGeorge Washington University School of Medicine maintains
that the brain of anelderly person is much more practical than is commonly
believed. At this age,the interaction of the left and right hemispheres of the
brain becomesharmonious, which expands our creative possibilities. That is why
among peopleover the age of 60 you can find many personalities who have just
started theircreative activities.

Of course, thebrain is no longer as fast as it was in youth. However, it gains
inflexibility. Therefore, with age, we are more likely to make the
rightdecisions and less exposed to negative emotions. The peak of human
intellectualactivity occurs around the age of 70, when the brain begins to work
in fullforce.

Over time, theamount of myelin in brain increases, a substance that facilitates
the rapidpassage of signals between neurons. Due to this, intellectual
abilitiesincrease by 300% compared to the average.

Also interesting isthe fact that after 60 years a person can use 2 hemispheres
at the same time. This allows us to solve much more complex problems.

Professor MonchiUri, from the University of Montreal, believes that the elderly
brain choosesthe path that consumes less energy, eliminates the unnecessary and
leaves onlythe right options to solve the problem. A study was conducted in
whichdifferent age groups participated. The young people were very confused
whilepassing the tests, while those over 60 years old made the right decisions.

Now, let's look atthe characteristics of the brain between the ages of 60 and
80. They are reallypink.

*_CHARACTERISTICSOF THE BRAIN OF AN OLDER PERSON._*

1. The neurons ofthe brain do not die, as everyone around you says. The
connections between themsimply disappear if one does not engage in mental work.

2. Distraction andforgetfulness arise due to an overabundance of information.
Therefore, you donot need to focus your whole life on unnecessary trifles.

3. From the age of60, a person when making decisions does not use only one
hemisphere of thebrain, like young people, but both.

4. *Conclusion*: ifa person leads a healthy lifestyle, is mobile, has viable
physical activity andis fully mentally active, intellectual abilities *DO NOT*
decline with age, they simply *GROW*, reaching a peak at the age of 80-90 years.

*_HEALTHY TIPS:_*

-Don't be afraid of old age.                  -Strive to develop
intellectually.- Learn new crafts.

- Take an interestin life, meet and communicate with friends, make plans for
the future, travelas best you can.

- Don't forget togo to shops, cafes, shows.

- Don't shut upalone, it's destructive for anyone.

- Be positive, always live with the thought that *"all good things are still
ahead ofme!"*
