Willie felt optomistic about Barnabas coming back to the Old House. He had
been at the Old House when the sheriff had spotted the cane. Julia didn't know
about the cane. She had moved into one of the rooms at Collinwood. Willie
felt better about leaving the Old House with Julia staying at Collinwood. He
was going to take care of the Old House.
A cloud of darkness covered Collinwood. In the room where Julia had retired
for the night, she tossed fitfully. She thought she would be able to sleep if
she was away from the Old House. Deep in her subconscious, she could see
Widow's Hill. The picture changed showing the bottom of the cliff amid the
rocks. She saw a body of the man that had either jumped or had fallen to his
death. He laid face down on the rocks. His hair was light brown. She woke up
screaming, when she saw what he was wearing. It wasn't a coat. It was the cape
she
had seen so many times while she was living at the Old House.
Julia's bedroom door was opened and Elizabeth Stoddard and Carolyn hurried
in. Elizabeth tried to comfort her the best she could. The three of them heard
a sudden sound in the doorway. When Carolyn turned toward the sound, she saw
her cousin. He was rubbing the sleep out of his eyes. He did not have to ask
what the trouble was. He already knew. He turned and stumbled back to bed.
Carolyn stayed with Julia until she went back to sleep.
In the morning, Julia walked back to the Old House. She wanted to see if
Willie was still there. When she walked through the door, he walked down the
stairs.
"I didn't know you was comin' back today."
"I want you to do something for me."
"What?"
"I want you to go search at the foot of Widow's Hill."
"What for?"
"I had a dream last night. I saw Barnabas laying dead at the bottom of the
cliff."
Julia told him to go to Collinwood when he got back and tell her what he
found out.
