Paintball Guns For Beginners

A Little History
The first uses of paintball guns can be traced back to
approximately 1981 when James C. Hal invented them. At that time
paintball guns were used primarily by foresters and farmers to
mark trees and livestock. In 1985 Robert G. Shepherd came up with
the design specifically used for playing paintball games. The
earlier versions of paintball guns (like of many of today's
paintball guns) were powered by carbon dioxide. Your average
inexpensive paintball guns use the same carbon dioxide pressure
system to propel paintballs at targets, usually other humans, in
military Simulation games.

Gun Accuracy
In order for the paintball guns to be portable they have been
designed to use small co2 cartridges. Some paintball guns are
made to use a much larger co2 canister attached to the gun by a
flexible tube and carried on the belt or back of the shooter.
Since some paintballs are propelled by carbon dioxide there are
wide variations in velocity, thereby affecting shooting accuracy
and range. Other variables in the accuracy of the paintball gun
are the materials that the guns are made of, and the gun barrel
type and length. The ideal barrel length of sniper paintball guns
is between nine to fourteen inches with no porting from the first
eight inches of the barrel.

Firing Speed
Although the mechanical or spring fired paintball gun is a single
shot model which means you'll need to cock the gun each time you
want to fire one of the balls, most of the modern paintball guns
are semi automatic. The tops of the line electric powered guns
are able to achieve high rates of fully automatic fire.

Types of Guns
For the beginner it is probably a good idea to invest in a cheap
co2 powered paintball gun. Where as some cheap paintball guns are
operated by co2, other firing systems include:

a.) Electro-mechanical (a tiny but very powerful motor inside
which powers the spring firing mechanism)

b.) Pump (portable hand pump)

c.) Mechanical (spring fired and the cheapest type of delivery
system)

d.) Electro-pneumatic (a tiny electronic motor produces air
pressure)

You will have to decide on a pistol or rifle, or both.

Cost of Guns
Paintball guns can be quite expensive. The price of a paintball
gun varies according to its brand, model and firing systems. More
expensive guns are jam-packed with the latest sophisticated
paintball technology, but the sophistication is reflected in the
high cost. A note of caution here for the budget minded player is
that the electric powered painball guns give you very rapid fire
but are at the very high end of the cost and maintenance scale.
Paintballs guns can vary from a $30.00 pistol up to and over a
$150.00 rifle.

If an appropriate selection is made, used paintball guns can
provide years of good service. The main advantage of used
paintball guns is that they are a lot cheaper than brand new
ones. Cheap paintball guns are also available in kits, which
often include air tank, hopper, and mask.

In conclusion don't forget the accessories that are necessary to
engage in Paintball games. You will need protective gear,
numerous paintballs, able companions, a good sense of
sportsmanship, and a challenging field to play on. Oh yes, and a
desire to have lots and lots of fun.
