I think "blame" is the wrong word, but...your buddy who wrote Starman kicked off the most recent wave of reboots with The Golden Age mini. He's the one who lit the fire under Johns (who creates his fair share of new characters - for good or ill).
I know Shag has that tired old idea that the era of new characters is over, but the way DC builds generations is clever and works for me. Blue Beetle isn't new, but the new Blue Beetle is awesome. The Atom isn't new, but the new Atom is very different (and a lot like Blue Devil, it's true!). So, they're new but in old costumes. Works for me. Didio is a criminal who should be in chains. He should be pilloried in the public square. He's an ogre, a malady. It's a triumph of virtue that he was kicked upstairs. Marvel fans are all crazy. They don't know what good is. Stories are good. When you wonder if things will stay messed up forever, it's good. When Batman "died" nobody wondered if he would stay dead. When Iron Man turned heel in Civil War, folks lost their minds, and he was bad for years. The illusion of change is exciting! Whenever you ask a Marvel fan why they don't like the Bendis era, they say they have a soft spot for some fringe era. Marvel fan: "Secret Invasion sucks! Why can't they bring back the good old days of the Ghetto Defenders? That's when Marvel was Marvel! Good old Gargoyle!" Marvel fan 2: "What about when the Hulk and Ghost Rider were in the FF!? The glory days!" You guys are nuts. N-V-T-S, nuts! DC fans are superior human beings because they recognize narrative, they appreciate the construction of tales, they like writing. That's why they like Marvel. Wrap your infinity gauntlet around that!! I raise a glass to the End of the Didio Era! Two glasses!
