Shag is exactly right that there is a lot of "the grass is greener
over there" to this phenomenon. Part of that effect is this: I don't
know DC history very well at all, so *I don't know* when something is
a retread, etc. When I see a writer I like doing something good at
DC, even if it's a retread to you guys, I can stilll jump right in
and enjoy it because I have no pre-existing baggage there.

On the other hand, if Marvel puts out the 400th re-working of "The
Infinity Gauntlet" story, I just throw my hands in the air and run
away.

(Okay, well, probably not, since I love the cosmic stuff that much.
But you get my point.)

And re: ravenface's comments:

>> Whenever you ask a Marvel fan why they don't like the Bendis era, they say
>> they have a soft spot for some fringe era.  <<

I will certainly admit to having a soft spot for, say, the late 1970s
Marvel comics. Particularly the Shooter/Perez Avengers and the like.
But that has nothing to do with why I don't like (to put it mildly)
the Bendis era.

Here are some things that have NOTHING to do with my dislike of Bendis
on Avengers comics:

* The team / lineup. Honestly, I couldn't care less WHO the Avengers
are, at a given point in time, as long as the stories are well-
written.
* The art.

Reasons I despise the Bendis era:

* He cannot write.
* He does not understand the characters.
* He cannot write dialogue. (Or, to be fair, he cannot write dialogue
I actually want to read.) Having characters go back and forth with
some variation of, "Because I'm--" "No, you were--" "But what I'm
saying is--" "That's what I am trying to--" This is not dialogue I
want to read.
* He cannot write team books. Solos, not so bad, but...
* He comes up with great "concepts" but fails to execute them
properly.
* His endings, such as they are, are terrible.
* In at least the first two years of his run, the actual Avengers
rarely did much to solve the problems in the stories.
* His stories are far too decompressed.
* He has no ear for the distinctive manners of speaking of many
classic Marvel characters, including Dr. Doom and Thor.

These are just a few that come to mind. None of them have anything to
do with me being stuck on some past glory period and not being willing
to embrace a new writer. Hell, I consider Busiek's run the second-
best ever, and I read that when I was in my thirties, 25 years after I
first started reading AVENGERS.

I continue to boycott every Bendis book, with the exception of SIEGE.
I fully understand that on the glorious day when Bendis finally leaves
the Avengers books, their sales will go down and their brief period of
dominating the Marvel Universe will end. I don't care. I'll accept
that as the price. I want him gone yesterday.
