How is this any different than any other free service hosting ads on their
site?

As much as folks retweet contest ads from SyFy and the like, even if someone
retweets a promoted tweet it's really not going to make *that* much
difference in the grand scheme of things (except that I'll be more inclined
to unfollow them if they do it overmuch). Furthermore, I get texts from
certain companies outside of twitter for updates on shows (Bravo being one
of the mentioned promoters, for instance) or product discounts (Tropical
Smoothie).

While I would consider paying a quarterly fee for the service twitter
provides, I'm just as happy if they find some corporate sponsors and keep it
free.
