I've been using Avast for a long time, and I like it. It's light weight and doesn't bog the computer down. Keep in mind you only want one anti-virus app running at the same time. Because they can interfere with and corrupt each other, unlike anti-spyware apps.
Also, a full license of malware-bytes is worth the money. It will run in the background and actively defend against spyware and whatnot.
