You pretty much nailed my rationale.  Gorehounds have been buying into
that premise since NOTLD; to non-horror fans who are not familiar with
the allegorical commentary of the Romero movies, that is a novel
concept, hence a lot of the acclaim.

I admit that is very cynical but I am a cynical person sometimes.
