Patrick is the real expert on this subject, but I believe the series finale
was filmed far in advance of the series being canceled. For example, the
series ended at the end of the fifth season. I want to say the series
finale was filmed sometime in the fourth or third season because they were
worried about being canceled with no notice. However, I can't find
anything online to back that up.

However, this idea is supported by the fact that the series finale doesn't
acknowledge any of the dangling subplots from the fifth season (i.e. evil
leaper).

Regardless, I liked the ending. It certainly wasn't a happy ending for Sam
(meaning he didn't return home), but it did show that Sam was meant to be a
leaper and would continue to help people. Supporting the idea of destiny.
